The average chemical formula for common diesel fuel is C12H23, ranging from approx. C10H20 to C15H28.
Water H2O and soot C are just 2 of the waste products of the combustion process, when combined with oxygen O from air. Would seem normal to me. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_exhaust It might be a good idea to regularly check the engine coolant level, just in case any is finding it's way into the exhaust. |

If it’s running ok, and levels remain ok. Then I wouldn’t worry.

A UK model 2.2 shouldn't have a sooty exhaust, due to the DPF. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

In a typical UK climate, on average for every gallon of fuel you burn you emit a gallon of water. Ride like you stole it!!

Thanks for the replies. It seems I’m being a hypochondriac. Having only had my defender a short time and never being able to look up a car exhaust before as they are now all hidden and pointed to the ground, I was a little shocked especially initially thinking it was oil.
I shall monitor levels, which I’m sure will be fine, then sleep easy tonight. |
