Bonnet catch issue
Ah another day another issue Sad, gotta love a Defender

So driving along I've noticed my bonnet opens itself as if I'd pulled the leaver under the dash. Thankfully it's not gone past the initial catch and flown off into my windscreen yet..


So any clues what I'm looking at to fix this ?

Either the prong on the bonnet, or, more likely, the receptacle on the shut panel is worn and needs replacing.

I had exactly the same problem last year and had to replace the receptacle to cure it.

It may also be worth checking that the cable runs freely and is not sticking.

If it is getting some cable lube (as used on bike brakes) down it and see if that improves it. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Sometimes the cable is worn and frayed.
Mine is slightly, but not causing any issues yet.

Wire is not as tight as I'd expect but no clue on how you would access it easily?

Do you need to work through the tiny access holes or take the whole fan assembly out? I can't wiggle or pull the bonnet open so it's only when driving along it does it

The fault will be either wear on the prong - the thing with a spring surrounding it - or the catch in the receptacle that the prong goes into. The prong simply unsrews from the bonnet once the lock nut is loosened (but beware that the spring is quite powerful), to access the recptacle you need to take the grill off.

The prong has a sort of arrow head on it which should have sharp shoulders. If thye are rounded, the bonnet will prong open as you describe. More often that not, it is the edge of the catch in the receptable that wears though, which has the same effect. You cannot see the relevant edge, however, so if the prong looks good then replace the receptacle. Neither is particularly expensive.

Also when you refit leave som slack in the operating cable, since if it is too tight the parts may not engage fully.

If you have a/c (which I don't) accessing the receptacle may be more difficult.

The catch you have photographed is the secondary catch and the onlt thing between you and a wrecked bonnet and smashed windscreen at the moment!

Note that these are not necessarily the exact parts for your vehicle, since there are two different diameters that were used. Check the part numbers for the model year or VIN of your vehicle. I just grabbed these links quickly to show you what I am talking about. Thumbs Up

Cheers , so aftermarket ok so we think or twice the price LR? Also were the different diameters user on different year ranges? Mines 2002 52 plate

Swapped the striker out seems much better when closed. Not sure if it matters if the groove is vertical or not though as it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'll test it at speed now.

The 'groove' is just a slot so that a screwdriver can be used to adjust the pin.

Lol excellent I thought that was the case but wasn't 100%. I actually think the old one just needed adjustment/tightening but new was only £6 so hopefully that's now fixed.
