How do you extract an Alpine head unit?
Hi Guys,
I expect this is a very simple question when you know the answer, but I am reluctant to go poking around these fragile little things too much without an idea of what I am trying to achieve.
I want to extract my head unit to attach some new woofer cables, I have got the front panel of the radio off but now I'm not sure how to proceed to extract the unit itself.
Knowing how clever you lot are, I'm optimistic someone will know the answer and can oblige....?
Many thanks.
John.

You will need some Alpine radio removal keys. That OR remove the centre dash and you can remove it that way. The keys solution is the simplest providing they fit correctly however removing the centre dash would mean you could avoid buying any but is a pain everytime you want to whip the HU out. As I assume it's an Alpine unit fitted from factory LR could probably supply these. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Sounds simple enough Steve, LR don't do them but my local Halfords does so I'll be down there in the orning, they can take it out and then sell me whatever tool they used to do it!.
Thank you.
By the way, the Alpine woofer came today, it has so many leads with it I'm sure no extras are required.
Thumbs Up

That's good then. just make sure they don't touch anything except removing it. Or it will likely be mucked up. Rolling Eyes Whistle $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I find opening up the centre console is the easiest by miles. Loads of room to broddle about (I don't know how gynaecologists do what they do) then easy to seat it all back. No risk of scratching anything too.

Hi Mrandmrsh,
Console extraction sounds very interesting as it will give me a chance to look around to see where the rain's getting in Confused Also recommended as worth investigation by the local radio installer who felt that my front plastic radio cover seemed to be wedged in rather tightly.
Are there any things to look out for - heater connections etc that migth prove awkward when reassembling?
Thanks,
John.

I know you were talking to the OP (And don't wish to cause any offence) But removing the centre dash you shouldn't have any trouble with at all. And not a lot you can do wrong. All I would mention is check there is no trapped cables between the centre dash and the rest of the dash when re-fitting & also check no cables and getting in the way of the lower controls as they are mechanical especially the heater and venting slider controls. CHeck that no wires are affecting these. If you need room to store any excess cable there I'd recommend the recess below these controls to the rear of the diff lock warning sticker there is no issues with getting in the way of anything there. HI Steve and Mrandmrsh,
Am I missiing something? I have undone the two large screws, one either side of the centre console but nothing wants to come out, it is stuck fast, is there something else I have to undo? or a particular direction to push/pull before anything moves?
I have put thin plastic levers down either side and tried to persuade it to move but it's not coming out!
Many thanks,
John, getting on with the wing tops now while hoping for a reply on this!

A mix of pull from the bottom and get your fingernails in at the top just between the moulded centre dash and the black pen holder is roughly where u need to be. If stuck I can nip and do a pic but in the bath now lol

To get the unit out you need these keys, it says Sony but they are the exact ones needed to remove the Alpine head unit Thumbs Up

Hi Mrandmrsh,
Thanks for your latest tip, using more force and starting at the bottom was indeed the way to go and it is now on its way out. Can't understand why you were typing to me last time from the bath! ? but glad you did anyway.
Now let's see what I find when I extract this thing....... Thumbs Up

JOhn.

To the Amp usually extremely near to the power and earth terminals on the Amp from the battery. Thumbs Up There will be three terminals on the Amp. Battery - + and remote + If you take a peak in my Gallery on here on my Amp you will see the remote turn on is in between the power and earth. Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

It's the connection at the head unit I am after, I'll see if I can find a head unit wiring diagram.

If you don't have it to hand they are often available online to download instead. Kenwood's are at least so I'd imagine yours could be too even though Alpine.
Thumbs Up
They are usually about 6" max or less like a tail with a bare end usually with a tag on for insulation purposes. Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R
