 2003 Defender 110 Td5 G4 Challenge Tangiers Orange
Paint colour question
As previously documented, my n/s lower door hinge captive nut is no longer captive so I’m going to sacrifice a hinge and fit ones I sourced today. These are in bare metal finish so I’ll need to paint them and that where today’s question came from…
The defender is definitely silver, I’m guessing Zambezi silver but the paint code on the chassis plate is 637 and there’s not a trace of Coniston Green on this car. However, can anyone confirm from the pic below if it is Zambezi?

You don't say if you're having problems with the front door or the second row door, but if the latter you may be unaware that you can access the captive nut by going up inside the B-post from under the car. Access is of course very limited but you might be able to stop it turning.

If it is the front door you have fewer options and drilling the head off the fastener or destroying the hinge to cut the fastener are really the only options.

It looks like Zambezi (LRC737) but I can't find anything to confirm that it was that colour that the 'Silver' edition was painted in. It was only in use on Defenders during 2001-02 though, so more than likely is as that corresponds with the year when the 'Silver' edition was produced. Darren

Have seen Defenders with a largish hole drilled inside the bulkhead A post. I do not know if it was to take off a spinning captive nut, or to add security (as I found a nyloc nut). Of course this can only be done for the lower front door hinge.

If sideway pressure on the hinge is applied, it can stop the bot from spinning and slowly drill the head out. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Many thanks for the replies, it is the front near side lower hinge that has the problematic nut and I’m working on the worst case of sacrificing the hinge.

I’ll use the Zambezi paint code and get an aerosol made up and see how it matches up. I’m not sure if the silver edition were issued to the MOD but it is an early 2002 model that didn’t get a registration plate until 2011/2. Not sure where it served but its got the SVO plate and wing decals (although these need replacing). 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

I think Zambezi silver is close but looking at the front wings as a match, the car may also be indus silver even though this is a 2002 car. It’s definitely had a light spray over at some point as the special vehicle ops wing badges have been painted over.

I managed to drill the heads of the bolts holding the lower hinge to the bulkhead and remove it. The pin was pretty worn and had a lot of play. New captive nuts and stainless bolts and we’re good to go!

Took the opportunity to refresh the mirrors too but the $hitpart mirrors just threaded on the ball and socket tensioner, OEM are daft prices so I’ll give Bearmach a go this time.

Thanks for all the pointers…..
