No doubt that because that generation were made of sterner stuff, notably the Edwardian explorer types, they ate the cement cakes regardless, with a good dollop of five year old tinned lard and washed down with a jolly good bottle of bootleg kirsch and had a 'rare old time'. Monsieur Le Grenadier
