I looked at the tentbox / Costco stuff but in the end plumped for the direct4x4 version. Looking at them they appear to built by the same manufacturer with the same fittings etc but the direct 4x4 'cargo' version is a) noticeably bigger and b) £700 cheaper if you don't want the roof bars/ awning, even at Costco prices.

From the research I've done I believe the tentbox, direct4x4 and roofnest falcon tents all appear to be sourced from the same chinese supplier. Happy to be corrected however (google alibaba hard roof tent)
The Direct4x4 version is definitely longer and wider than the tentbox offering however. Quality is ok. As theyre so slimline however, you struggle to leaving any sleeping gear in the tent as it won't close. My plan is to replace the the foam mattress with an inflatable mat and therefore gain 3 inches of internal space to store bedding. The general build quality is good, zips could possibly be heavier duty but haven't had issues yet. The aluminium roof isn't insulated so does attract condensation on cold nights. It stands up much better to the weather than previous (and current) soft shell tents I've had. Last edited by camelman on 21st Apr 2021 3:50pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Oh that's perfect! I have the same Flatdog Rax as you too.
So it appears to be the same width as the rack. It uses the T-Track to secure it? Do you have any other photos of it square on from the front? Or any other photos? They are really helpful. Happy with the quality? |

This is the closest I have to a full frontal shot.
You will need the roof tent mounts from flatdog to raise it slightly to clear the roofrack outer rail, I used 6 with the tent being quite long for support Click image to enlarge Last edited by camelman on 21st Apr 2021 3:48pm. Edited 1 time in total |

@jim_bean, be aware I've got it mounted on the 130 so there won't very much space left on a 110 roof rack once it's fitted.

Brilliant - thanks for all the info and the photos.. Really helps!
Going to look at it in the flesh next week. Looks like it sits well on the rack. I'll contact Flatdog about the tent mounts. Can you mount bars on the top like you can with the Tentbox version? I was hoping to put a couple of Kayaks on the top of it. |

Yep, it has a similar M8 track mount running around the lower base and upper lid for mounting accessories including the 'roof' bars.
Are you going to see it in their showroom in Derby? |

Yes, i've booked to go and see it on Wednesday next week. If you are closer (i'm in Newcastle Under Lyme) perhaps I could take a look at yours?
I'm hoping i can mount three wolf boxes in the canvas storage bag on the top of the tent. Sounds like it should be fine. |

How did you get on with your visit, I've been following your discussion as I'm getting pretty close to making a decision if we're going to get a roof tent for this year. Keith
