Strange noise when turning.
There is a strange noise in the Puma. (It is not the wife talking). I get a "whu, whu, whu," sound when the steering is turned to the left (passenger side). It disappears once I straighten up the steering. Power steering fluid level is fine and I do not see anything rubbing. It sounds like it is coming from the front wheel area. Any ideas? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Mine did that, always at very slow speeds turning left. I changed the pas fluid last year and its much better now. 1953 80"

Interesting. As far as I know the PAS was changed a few years ago but it is worth a try. Thank you. Thumbs Up 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

If you have a steering guard, it could be that rubbing on the steering arm. A bit of pounding through ruts and they bend the guard. Peter

I have exactly the same noise but in the drive side. Did you find out what it was?

Nope. It is very infrequent and hard to pin down. It cannot be anything serious as the vehicle was through the annual test (your MOT) and I got no notifications about anything needing changed and they shake the living daylights out of it on the machine. Probably sometime in the future me or the garage will find out what it is but I do not worry about it. If there is an almighty EUREKA moment and I find out what it is I will let you know. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I had more of a squeak when turning in one direction. Turned out to be the seals on the steering damper had gotten dry. A bit of silicon lube and all was quiet again and has been for the last year or so.

I had that very issue on my last Defender, changing the Power Steering fluid solved the problem for me.
I think there was air in the system, it only happened on turning to the passenger side.

I had changed one of the PAS pipes ( because of a slight leak / rusty pipe ) and changed
the fluid at the same time.

It solved the problem for me, changing the fluid and bleeding the system properly may
Solve your issue.
