Netgear routers have parental control
being a dad of 3 children, internet filtering was something that I needed to sort out ... I was so pleased to find out that netgear provide a free "parental controls" intetrnet filtering service.

if you are able to to use a netgear, google "netgear parental controls" - problem solved in no time = more time to spend on polishing my land rover Very Happy

So is the control to stop the kids, or is it so that you don't stumble across anything, get excited and then end up making a fourth with the missus? Wink

Same issues as BP for me, need to keep an eye on what the kids are up to, whilst retaining overall control for myself .... ahem.... Embarassed

For folk not using Netgear routers, but have Windows 7 on their PC's, then Microsoft provide some free parental control stuff too.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows...ily-Safety

You download the windows software onto each PC that could be used by the kids, so even if they have their own netbook and go off to a mates house, you're still in control Thumbs Up

Deffo works well with Windows 7 but it doesn't appear to like older versions of Windows.... Sad Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

just to be clear, the netgear solution runs on the router, so it does not matter if its a windows xp, 7, mac or smart phone over wifi .. all web site requests are verified. it can also send you a log .. not tried it yet.

or you can use opendns, free more secure and constantly maintained. Used by a lot of schools.

Update your router DNS and job done.

........but if you have children with laptops and they travel to friends houses, OpenDNS will work there as well Thumbs Up . It tracks the machine MAC address registered to the account where ever it is. You can run your ODNS account from any location as it is a web based service, therefore when I am away, if Mrs TC reports back an issue with being able to access a site, I can get onto my ODNS account and physically allow said site etc. (the conversation usualy goes along the lines of 'computer says no, please sort it geek boy Very Happy )

The other key advantage is that you won't be using your ISP DNS servers - OpenDNS's servers are v powerful, much more so than any UK based ISP, it is therefore possible to see a performance gain.

I map the kids machines through ODNS and there are times during the day where their connections are noticeably quicker than mine (I don't have fibre broadband though, when you go fibre, any perceived performance gains will likelly evaporate)

Do it!

Thumbs Up

Can't you just change your DNS settings and miss the service out ? 2011 Defender XS 110 Station Wagon - Rejected

of course you can enter any DNS server you like. I just lockdown the control panel so the kids cannot get to the required screen.

Opendns is very very good though as TC says its not router dependent. Which is very appreciated on public wifi points as it blocks all the malware sites.
