Got a 40 mile trip tomorrow to Crewe - mix of main A roads and M56/M6 - so will stretch its legs a bit (for "dad work" at son's house - but actually any trip anywhere for any reason will be taken at this point Rolling with laughter ) Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

First issuette of any kind this morning.

I was proceeding at around 70mph on the M60 northbound taking the outer slip road up onto the M61 and just gently eased the loud pedal to make sure I came onto the four lane section running up to the tunnels with plenty of space/room and no one able to chop me up from lanes either side of me and the auto box just didn't want to change up, the engine got up to 3,000 rpm for more seconds than I was comfortable with, and the gearbox wouldn't move until I relaxed the loud pedal... I'm only 250 miles in, may be its learning my driving style - which currently is constrained as advised in iGuide for first 1,500 miles

Anyone else experienced this? Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I think mine does the same. If you give a bit of beans and in changes down, then ease off it will hold the gear for a good few seconds in case your going to accelerate again. Avoids a Down-Up-Down shift which would be construed as ‘hunting’
Normal behaviour on most cars with modern auto boxes I would say. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

The D240 does the same thing Rev wise even almost a year into owner ship it’s annoying that you do a kick down to overtake (don’t get me wrong, having a Defender that I can safely overtake without planning or waiting for a huge gap in the traffic is wonderful ) and the gearbox that was quite happy riding along on its torque drops a couple of gears and becomes a frantic 3500 rpm screamer that is reluctant to shift back up the gears. I find on those occasions it’s better to shift into S and manually shift up sooner than the ECU / Gearbox wants to do it. I don’t think that this is a “learning” gearbox otherwise mine would have learned to shift up much sooner than it does. Peak torque for the D240 is about 1400rpm so why does if need to hang on to high revs. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

^^^^ Thank you for the complement - I absolutely love it's look! Thumbs Up

I agree about the engine - I've come from a 4 pot 163BHP Isuzu Diesel (and 190BHP TDV6 D3 before that) and even the 'lower spec' D200 engine is a treat - you just can't hide those 6 pots - even though the BHP is lower, the Torque spec for it is better even than the D240 4-pot at 430nm, (which of course for a long while was the 'top spec' diesel)

EDIT - thanks to Tim for flagging mistake Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Steve, the D240 4 pot has “only” 430 torques from 1400 rpm not 570which comes at only 1250 of the 6 cylinder engine D250 - even the D200 6 pot makes more torque (500) from 1250 rpm than the D240
Those numbers are from the configurator and my “personalised e-brochure” technical section for the D240 Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Have done my first long runs in mine yesterday and today - SE Manchester to Torquay yesterday and the return journey today.

The vehicle purred along at speeds on and around the speed limit - and the speed camera warnings on the M5 and M6 were perfectly timed to allow me to Cancel the 'overspeed' cruise and let the speed reduce to close enough to the required limits to not trouble the cameras... though it did let me down yesterday on the A380 approaching Torquay when I went pass a Speed Camera Van in a layby in a 70mph limit with me doing an indicated 75mph - don't think this will be an issue because of speedo over-reading and X% leeway etc, (but I shall watch for a NIP dropping through the letterbox just in case Embarassed )

But the real reason for this post is Rack Roar. It's there at 45mph and above on mine and nullified simply by turning the radio volume up a notch - doesn't actually bother me. But what I did do, at 70mph, was place my left hand flat against the ceiling liner (I have no sunroof of any kind on mine) to see if I could feel anything. And I most certainly did! There was a significant throbbing vibration coming through, literally felt like the whole roof panel was flexing/vibrating at high frequency. I'm assuming this is a big part of the roar noise.

I'd be interested to know whether others experience similar (or not) whether they have a rack, bars or nothing on top? Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I think the speed camera warning only beeps for the static cameras

It does not have the data for the mobile sites. Unlike my road angel which will alert to a known mobile site regardless if camera is present.

Waze can alert a mobile site.

Hopefully no NIP for you. Cheers Simon

Fingers crossed Steve. Like said, it’s only fixed camerasites it will know about.

Without the rack it’s a really smooth quiet ride. You could try adding some wind deflection under the rack to quieten it down? I’ve got some thick foam you could wedge under it against the roof to prove the vibration theory if you want?

I did London return yesterday. Very smooth and quiet. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

For those not on the Book of Face, made a minor mod to mine this weekend

I fitted a Sixty five quid rubber protection strip to the top of the rear bumper. A nice thick chequer plate pattern. The only issue is that it was coiled a bit tight in a box and one end tip had a negative curve on it which couldn't quite get out, so it's got a 6 inch strip of helper masking tape on it for encouragement for 24 hours

@SN

What's the quality of this ABS stripe? The link you provide on Amazon shows it's delivered from China. 22MY Defender 110 (actual) | 10MY Freelander 2 (history) | 15MY Discovery Sport HSE (history)
