Thoughts?
https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1326021

Any advice on the above listing would be much appreciated please chaps!

I’ve spoken with the owner and he seems like a genuine enthusiast and is going to organise a viewing before the weekend for me.

It has a later 2.0 petrol fitted and just needs a good service and tyres apparently. Charlie

Not a huge deal but the vehicle is still registered as having the 1695cc engine with DVLA.

Ah, interesting.

As you say, not a huge deal. More a case of people being lazy and not informing the DVLA than anything else. Charlie

Isn't that wrong anyway? The original engines were only1595cc. Darren

^ yes, it is wrong.

I wonder which 1997cc it is fitted with - if it is an early Siamese-bore 2L it will be very similar to the original 1600, and may even have been retrofitted with the square sump. If it is the later spread-bore engine it will be somewhat different, and the later starter requires a bell-housing swap as I recall and minor changes to the transmission tunnel.

The aluminium bulkhead is interesting but not rare, and has been the subject of exhaustive discussion on the S1 Club forum. Once it was thought that there was a small batch built when the press tool at Fisher and Ludlow (who made the 80" bulkheads) broke down, but chassis number data gathered subsequently suggests that they are very widely scattered throughout production vehicles of all ages. It may be that the tooling was chronically unreliable, but an alternative theory is that they were offered as replacements after 80" production ended and the tooling was destroyed. This theory is however undermined by the number of vehicles which seem to have them as original fitment, so the real explanation is probably more complicated. The debate continues, and probably will do so for a while yet. If you do buy the vehicle it would be useful to get its chassis number onto the S1C's aluminium bulkhead register though.

Overall the impression given by the rather sparse and unrevealing photos is of an interesting and fairly unmolested and authentic vehicle, definitely worth a look if you are in the market for one.

A great bit of info there Blackwolf, thanks!

Yes I was in the market for a LBG Series 1 but then spoke with Julian Shoolheifer who rather put me off restoring one, because of the costs! However this one has just popped up for sale, and the owner isn’t asking a ridiculous sum for it. So, if all is well, I may well have it off him.

I think that at the moment the cost of a full restoration, coupled with the inevitable loss of patina, is off-putting. Some parts do seem to be extremely expensive. Try finding an 80" steering box in good condition, for example.

I have two 80" S1s both of which I have owned for around 40 years and at present neither is roadworthy. I have however been accumulating parts for 40 years with a view to getting both back into a roadworthy condition in the next decade or so. If you snap parts up when you see them, rather than going out specifically to try to find them when you need them, it is rather less painful. One of my 80s was my daily driver from about 1977 to 1985, the other was a largely-complete vehicle I bought from a barn for spares and was considered not worth repairing then, but which is now very definitely worth repairing due to the changed times we are in.

Quite recently I managed to find a pair of new old-stock Lucas SE62 trafficators (the correct ones for an 80", which are different to the more common SE100 used on the 86" etc), which are incredibly rare - they actually cost me twice what I paid for my first complete running 80" vehicle in 1977, but were a bargain at that!

If I was in the market for a running 80" and had the readies I would definitely be looking at the one you've found. It looks right, it looks in reasonable condition and not over-restored, and you could have a lot of fun with it. If it is was mine, though, those front indicators would have to go.

I will be interested to hear how you get on.

Well fingers crossed the seller gets back to me this evening and I can view it tomorrow/Friday!

Yes ditching the indicators would be on my list.

Julian was saying a patina resto would be at least £60K including parts. For comparison, our Series 2 was £60K (including vehicle purchase) to be fully restored by Philip Bashall. Charlie

PS: You will probably have noticed that it has the (optional) opening vent panel under the windscreen. These were most commonly (but not exclusively) found on military vehicles, so it might be worth looking for other evidence of being ex-mil (which isn't a bad thing, it is just part of its history). I can't see any obvious other signs, so it may be a rare civvy fitting. It is also nice to see a bonnet which doesn't have a spare wheel carrier.

Without knowing the chassis number it is hard to know the correctness of some of the other features (should it have flat-top hoodsticks and a twin-rear-window tilt, for example), but in reality this doesn't matter unless you are a rivet-counter.

I can well believe a £60k resto now. In some ways I think that would be cheap once the labour is factored in.

I notice that in none of the photos are any door tops fitted - I wonder if he has them? If not, it is possible to find them or get repros now.

It looks a lovely little Series 1, a later engine is certainly no bad thing in terms of reliability/usability as the spreadbores have better cooling.

Prices certainly seem to have gone silly recently, my personal feeling is that for the asking price I would like to see matching numbers throughout (save for the engine of course) and the vehicle to be in a generally unmolested condition (which it does look to be). It would be worth joining LRSOC, a great font of knowledge and the vehicles coming up for sale are (or at least were) reasonably priced.

This doesn't really help but when I was in the market for an 80" towards the end of 2019, a club member was looking to offload an ex-military, aluminium bulkhead 80" for about the 9k mark. Of course I bought something far less sensible but a lot cheaper in the end (Matching numbers 1951 but a non-runner). 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

The seller did say it still had its rear white diff for the convoy light, but no longer had any convoy lighting.

Yes he does have the door tops actually. They’re just stashed away, but would obviously come with the vehicle. Charlie

OK, so it probably is ex-mil, but that just gives you more options for things you can do in the future. Thumbs Up

It was £8k plus auction costs (£10k ish overall) to buy the vehicle.

Then a total of £50k for a full nut & bolt resto at Dunsfold DLR. It did at least win best restored at LR Legends in 2019 Rolling with laughter
