Would have been more interesting had it been a grooved runway!

Was good to see what the 90 could do off the tarmac or gravelled road. Thumbs Up

You should read the accident report for Hammond's jet car crash at Elvington. The H&S undertaken, or rather not, was heavily criticised.

The BBC was twice threatened with legal action by the Health and Safety Executive to stop planned stunts such as plucking a member of the public from an exploding chimney by helicopter; that's before you get on to the death of Michael Lush...

I am sure if we all went into great depths with H&S assessments for everything we did we would all be wrapped up in cotton wool.
One of the best times I have had was going over 60mph in a soapbox down access road at Cairngorm mountain. Yes, I could have been badly injured but that doesn't say it shouldn't happen.
Have you ever watched YouTube? At least with the BBC there are a host of assessments undertaken and I am sure this latest "stunt" on the runway was one of their least risky ones to date. I certainly wouldn't be overly concerned about doing that, certainly safer than riding a motorbike at 60mph along A roads with other unknown risks from all angles. If folks want to take risks it is their choice as long as others that are unaware are not also put at risk. 90S D250 fuji and loving it.

Not just H&SE but the insurers would have said “no go” if they felt the risk was too great - I’m sure that all three presenters and the peso. Called The Stig will have had pretty hefty insurance policies Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

The G got filthy inside. Look at the dash and steering wheel when he was stuck.

Harris has posted a few times on Instagram how much he likes the Defender since.

That was the very assumption that got Hammond all those weeks in intensive care... read the report, it's all there in black and white.

H&S has its place, there were so many areas/trades where people would take awful decisions, often on behalf of other people, that led to serious injury or even death. Building trade being up there, but so many other industries such as oil, freight, shipping etc.

The Armed Forces, and everything it does, is littered with H&S: Range Days, Live Firing, River Crossings, Hot Weather training etc etc. But as we often see, despite the best intention behind requiring a H&S plan, people still get injured or killed, because of the inherent 'weak link' - the author. The quality of a H&S risk assessment is down entirely to the experience/intelligence/diligence of the author. If they're at the top of their game, it'll be excellent and should (in most circumstances) do its job. If they're inexperienced, stupid or prone to cutting corners, the assessment won't be worth the paper it's written on. I had to write loads, and the live firing assessments take ages, (beyond tedious) but if done properly should ensure NO-ONE dies. But as we saw just a month ago in Wales, they still do.

As an aside, the H&S executive can be overly risk-averse and when I joined the Army in '96 tried to ban Assault Courses and Live Firing for their inherent dangers. It completely escaped their attention that the purpose it to train, prepare and introduce soldiers to the dangers they might face in war. Monsieur Le Grenadier

In my experience (construction rather than armed forces), the weak link is very often the end user who either doesn't read the RA in the first place or does but then thinks they know better and does something different to what's mandated. Darren

Very true as well. Most soldiers do what they're told through threat of future discipline, albeit not necessarily very well. But there's always one who choses Not to do what he/she is told and think they know better. Rolling Eyes Monsieur Le Grenadier

Was very surprised that they were allowed to use the runway for that stunt? I'd have thought any unburnt titanium particles would not be good if ingested into an aero engine?

On the subject of Health and Safety......

I wonder how many buildings of the ancient world up to Victorian times would still be standing if Health and Safety and some bloke in a hiviz and clipboard had been invented earlier......

I mean just look at all those bridges over various motorways that are being replaced before they fall down compared to a Roman viaduct and other wonders.

Cant image Bigusdickas stopping construction of Hadrian's Wall due to open toe sandals and spear chucking locals … Whistle

Supacat I think that the maintenance squad at Oban Airport will be more concerned about seagulls nesting on the runway than small bits of titanium - they have plenty of time between flights to get the runway sweepers out with only a scheduled flight every other day and next to no private flights at the moment or during the filming period when Scotland was in lockdown.
