TD5 not charging

Battery went flat the other day. Voltmeter across the battery reads the same running as when engine is off BUT initially when I start up the voltage goes up to 14+ volts for a few seconds, enough to turn out the charging light. The old battery was ropey anyway so I bought a new one to rule it out. Still the same. I have virtually no voltage drop between the battery and the large alternator terminal. I managed to unplug the small plug on the back of the alternator and there is 12v on each wire with the ignition on. I am thinking alternator brushes worn or sticking. Anyone had similar?

On a Td5 it's quite possible that the alternator is full of oil from the vacuum pump. I'd be inclined to whip the alternator off and inspect it, or just bite the bullet and replace it.

Yes I have bitten the bullet Blackwolf. It is such a job to get off that I only want to do it once so I have ordered a new alternator. Got my local specialist to test the alternator today and he confirmed that the charge is very intermittent, the current goes up and down. Could possibly just be brushes, if so I will have a spare!
