Well apparently they may be removable and the bar can be replaced with clamps, studs or lugs:

"the recessed roof panel 300 of Figure 4 may have a substantially empty cavity defined by the concave surface of the basin. This cavity may be used as an additional 25 storage compartment of the vehicle. In the example of Figure 4, a cover 310 may be provided that closes the cavity defined for protecting the cavity of the basin from the outside environment, e.g. rain or dust. The cover 310 may be pivotably connected to the housing, e.g. to the lip portion 304 of the housing, via one or more hinges 306,308.
