Puma 90 kangarooing
My 2015 puma Defender 90 tends to kangaroo when starting off and running in low gear. Any solutions?

Welcome to the forum - this can be a number of things but usually caused by the poorly designed and restrictive air intake. There’s a (relatively) easy and (very) cheap way of sorting it, ie hacking out a bit of the air filter box. If you do a search it should throw up several threads, at least one of which has a step by step guide to follow should you fancy...

Or you can spend a lot of money on a replacement air box kit from Nugget Stuff.

Isn’t there a switch that fails causing this. Was it clutch or brake pedal switch, can’t remember which as I’m not a tdci boy.

Ohh and welcome .

Has it been mapped? Usually a poor mapping can cause this.

Clutch switch would usually cause the revs to stay up when changing gear.

I'll watch this thread with interest as mine does the same, but only really when it's warm or after a long drive.
I'm going to be changing the clutch and output shaft, so was hoping that might solve mine...only time will tell on that!

also...changing to the Nugget inlet didn't cure it either but did make it a smoother drive Wink

Research on the Volume Control Valve, VCV.
I believe it can cause hunting issues on tdci. If that leads to kangarooing effect, not sure.
Mine does it a bit when cold as I am very gentle on the throttle when cold. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Many thanks for the welcome and the suggestions. I am thinking of a remap but not imminently. It has been suggested that it might help. ??

I have a 2.2 TDCI and it does not suffer from this, so obviously something is wrong and should be addressed before looking at remaps.
Have you a code reader to see if there are any diagnostic trouble codes, as this will help identify if it is a sensor issue ie maf, or a peddle switch etc, or if it is mechanical ie clutch / output shaft etc , or a fuel filter or air filter etc.
Also how easy does your clutch peddle engage / disengage, the peddle box may need lubrication as this can cause a jerky clutch engagement when pulling away.

I’m less inclined to think its clutch or output shaft. But a few checks on DTC’s filters clutch peddle box etc will be easy to do, then highlighting any other issues you are experiencing will help narrowing it down to potential causes.

Thanks a lot for the info. It only kangaroos at lowish revs and when cold. I think it is engine control problem ( air or fuel ) rather than transmission.

If you do actually have a fault of some kind then nomap will solve it and could potentially cause more issues......

Check your air filter. Make sure the air box lid is seated well, check air hoses from box , check and clean maf sensor. Use proper maf sensor spray. Drain fuel filter to see if any water drains, replace it with gen filter if it’s been on a long while. Check and clean map sensor.
I mention the fuel filter as if your truck has been sitting idle for weeks between use, with a partially filled tank, condensation can form in the winter creating water in the bottom of the tank that can then be drawn into the filter.

All these are easy to do and low Cost. If the problem is not resolved then we are narrowing down the potential causes. Ie it could be an EGR issue, but that generally flags a DTC, hence asking if you have a code reader, ie an ELM327 and a free app on your phone to read DTC’s.

Just to add another to the list, how old is the clutch? When I changed mine it was like driving a brand new car again, smooth as you like. Mind you, as well as the clutch itself I’ve done the air box mod, output shaft, drive shafts, remap, lof master cylinder, lof power spring... I’m going now, I’ve got a headache coming on!
