1999 TD5 CSW with Headgasket failure and cracked head
Just after a bit of advise really. I bought my Defender 110 CSW TD5 from a dealer mid December 2020. My first TD5 and the most modern TD5 i've owned to date after having series vehicle and a 1989 110.

Now, after less than 2 months and less than 400 miles she has been diagnosed with a cracked head (head off and tested by a very reputable Land Rover specialist). Total cost of the repair will be around £3150 which will include a new head.

Now, the car has warranty which will pay £600 towards this so I have basically told the garage that they are obliged to pay for the rest of the repair under the sale of goods act etc etc. What would you do, ask for your money back and give them the vehicle back as is, or ask them to pay the bill?

I'm happy to have the vehicle repaired because I will keep her for years and look after her as I always do with my vehicles generally improving her along the way.

I'm just worried that they wont pay the bill.....

I guess it depends on the condition of the rest of the vehicle. If it were good value when I bought it, it was in otherwise fairly good condition, I'd probably mentally think I'll keep it but inform the dealer the bill was theirs to pay, knowing if they refused it wasn't the end of the world and I've then got a vehicle with a brand new rebuilt head and a checked solid engine.

If it's got other issues that that £2500 contribution you could well end up having to make yourself would really benefit from just to make it useable and you're not attached to it as "a really good one" perhaps it's a good plan to attempt to give it up as a bad job and hand it back.

Difficult to know where I'd sit personally without more details on the rest of the vehicle.

Had 2 cracked heads ( cracked in the diesel gallery) welded up got about another 60K each time, then picked up a S/H AMC spanish head for £100 off an engine that ran its big ends.

easy option is to return the car and get a refund if thats possible

fit a good 2nd hand head

get your head repaired.

i have a spare 10p one on the shelf off mine that has been repaired and if repaired well they are good for many more miles.

or spend the money and get a new amc head fitted
