Crikey, this is becoming a chore. This time I turn the ignition key and the Christmas lights come on, then turn to ignite and everything cuts out. Nothing mechanical turns over, so clearly electrical. Battery is 100%, all lights and switches work, radio etc. Is this the blasted switch or a dodgy wire? I noticed a brief problem with the off side headlight not working, then a shake of the loom and the light starts working again. Anyway, any thoughts on the craziness below? I have a new ignition switch (yet to be fitted) but wondering if the loom is the problem? Loose connection? Etc etc etc....

I'd start with the easiest / most obvious.
Battery earth clean and tight - try it Jump lead battery to block - try it fit switch (even just leave hanging under dash) - try it main relay - try it Obviously only change one thing before you try to start it again. Mine did weird things when the brushes in the back of the starter were well worn and breaking up. HTH Keith |

Thank you both, will get on it this morning. Ickle, what do you mean by ‘Jump lead battery to block it’? Monsieur Le Grenadier

He prob means take a jump lead connect the negative direct to the engine block to ensure you have a good earth incase the grounds on the block are broke Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.
5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

I hear a zapping sound. Is that a relay coming on/off/on rapidly?
The way the dash lights dim before going off seem like there is a high current draw through high resistance, like a dodgy earth. Is there any clicking sound from the starter indicating that it starts to draw the high currents? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
