Long time, no updates.
Ownership just passed 1yr and Mandy is going pretty well. After an unfortunate incident at a well known indy specialist, where a handbrake was not applied properly, and a Defender becoming a self driving version, it ended it's maiden autonomous voyage with a small bump into an air conditioning unit attached to a storage warehouse. Needless to say the Aircon unit was flattened and the Landie barely had a mark on it. Nonetheless, the garage were amazing at getting it sorted with a new bumper and freshly painted front wing and the car now looking better than ever. With some dark nights I have really been struggling with the standard lights, so I decided to give some relatively cheap LED ones a go (don't panic - they are.compliant with MOT). I also took that chance to repaint the light surrounds which were looking a bit sad, and changed colour from Brunel to Java to match the body. Just need to do the same to the grill and I think the front will look amazing. One issue which I haven't addressed is the central locking which seems to become very temperamental when it's cold and also experiencing a lot of cranking when cold to start. Update for Mandy, as it's been a wild few months!
As per this thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/post956172.html#956172 I suffered a catastrophic engine failure...it turns out the valves on TD5s were built using two parts; the valve head and the valve stem. These are then joined to make a single valve. This was done to save money as the stem is a cheaper material. It seems that I was very unlucky, and the head of one of my valves parted with the stem, resulting in the head having a party with the piston and the chamber....everything was scrambled except the crank! So the car went to Trimley Rover and he built be a new engine which is absolutely stunning and runs fantastically well. So the car is back! The clutch with the stronger spring is really nice to use, nice and light and just as smooth as the old DMF that came out. While having the engine put in I also had James change all the diff and gear box oils so she is in fine fettle!.... We also ended up swapping the fuel pump as the existing one was making some very strange noises, so a new VDO one went in. Time now to get back to enjoying the car and recover from spending nearly £4k sorting her out! Click image to enlarge |

Click image to enlarge Thought I'd add some pics of the fuel pump work incase anyone is thinking about doing the job. I went for the tank out rather than hole in the floor. It was relatively easy. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

UPGRADE ALERT!!!
I needed new tyres and wanted 265s (simply for looks, judge me as you wish!) but didn't want to lose any turning circle....so a bit if Man maths later, spacers and tyre fitting i was half way to a new (2nd bend set of wheels). So picked up 5x 16 inch Blindos in grey with ET15 and shod them in 265 BFG ATs. Click image to enlarge What do you guys think? I love 'em! |
