Sorry to hear it's still an issue.
It could very well be the fork, going if not gone. Did you chat to Luke at LOF? Here's an off-the-wall suggestion.... one of the LR mags (think it was LRO) had a review not so long ago for an endoscope that worked on android phones. It was about £38 so I gave it a shot and have been very happy with it - used it to check for leaks at the back of my RR V8 valley gasket, and down the inlet manifolds. For £38 it might be easier than pulling the gearbox back just to check...? There's even a wee mirror attachment so that if you got the scope beyond the clutch fork, you might be able to look down and see if the fork is punching through?? And you never know what other uses you might find for an endoscope... After many hours in under and around the Defender the problem has been found.
Click image to enlarge So a new heavy duty clutch fork and release bearing is definitely necessary and the friction plate has about 0.75mm of material over the closest rivets to the surface. Now to choose between LOF Roadspec and Powerspec kits and start the rebuild. Any recommendations welcome. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper. Ouch! That's an unusual one. I'm sure I read something about some sort of pressure lock thing keeping pressure on the fork - though I'm afraid I can't remember where, and probably irrelevant at this stage. I do wonder why it went there though.
I have a LOF powerspec clutch fitted. I've been really impressed with the quality of the stuff, and with Luke's willingness to help out on the phone ( I had an issue with setting the pedal height initially) so I'd recommend LOF myself. I think that is already somebody's idea of a HD clutch fork, they don't usually have that 'reinforcement' plate welded on to cover the back of the pivot cup. Perhaps take some additional care of choosing a HD replacement. Simply welding a metal plate onto the back of a fork made of recycled monkeymetal does not turn a cheap, nasty fork into an indestructible HD item! There is plenty of shonky tat out there advertised as an 'upgrade'...... |
