Winter tyres vs summer.
I had winter tyres on my Audi A5 and it would get up icy inclines that the 110 wouldn't on Mud Terrains....

The number of premium 4x4 owners I see over here slip-sliding all over the place because:

A. They presume their premium 4x4 will get them anywhere on their behalf (car driving driver, rather than the other way round)
B. Bad driving; impatient, bad approach, speed etc
C. Incorrectly shod wheels. M+S at best, if not simply summer rubber.

No replacement for good driving skills, good winter tyres and a properly used car (not necessarily a 4x4). In 13 years I’ve never used chains, just snow tyres, and that includes getting my wife’s FWD mini up to Val Thorens in heavy snowfall. Road side littered with victims including one full fat RR that didn’t even make around the first roundabout in Moutiers and instead had driven straight over. Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

^^ It's yet another manifestation of the Peltzman Effect. The premium 4x4 does all the thinking for you, you don't need to think, nor do you need skill. Besides, as I heard one "yummy mummy" say to another last time there was white stuff round here, "it has a button for snow".

God help us!

I wonder what an autonomous car will make of snow and ice.

Set up i'd say.... the RR only spins his tyres briefly before stopping, then keeps doing that.... more than likely if they just gunned it, they would progress slightly.... it seems as soon as the RR starts moving a bit, they lift off the throttle.

And I can't imagine anyone would drive up then beep at someone who is "clearly" (ish), stuck...
