mine was pretty similar to this and it was the head. no symptoms other than pressurising. bubbles in expansion tank in your case point to head, if not where is the air coming from? Cheers

Thanks for the quick reply.
Yeah I figure its the head but thought I'd just see if anyone had any other bright ideas before I embark on that expensive journey Maybe time for an engine upgrade then |

The temp sensor in the dash never moves, my car over heated and blew out the filler bottle cap. The temp sensor was still in the middle.
I have a OBD Bluetooth dongle which displays live data on my phone, it’s the only way to really see the actual temp in real time. |

I am wondering if it may be the EGR or oil cooler issue.
Today I drained the oil....no sign what so ever of water contamination. I also removed the Oil cooler thermostat.....only to find the central section completely missing not sure why the previous owner would have done that! I also noticed that the wiring to the EGR was not connected correctly (the previous owner had broken the plug and the plug was not locked in place. |

Hi All,
Just thought I would post an update in case anyone is interested. I stripped out the EGR valve and EGR cooler - No obvious leaking but it was pretty clogged up so all cleaned and put back on I then stripped out the Oil cooler (housing away from the block) this was in a bad way. Hardly any water flowing through the cooler even with the hose on full pressure it just backed up and blew the hose off. (you can see the water ways are corroded) Also the seals between the water way and oil way look knackered. New oil cooler on the way complete with gaskets. Thats the Christmas lockdownwork list sorted Have a good Christmas Andy |

At least you found the cause and it’s way better than head gasket

Thanks for updating your thread...This is very interesting!
I’ve been troubleshooting a similar issue and the oil cooler wasn’t on my radar. Think I need to take a look at mine. I don’t suppose you have any pictures of what the issue was with your oil cooler by any chance? |

Another quick update. Apologies for the delay in uploading the pictures.
Oil cooler definitely dead but not sure the pictures really show this, although you can see evidence of corrosion. you can't even blow through the coolant inlet pipe. The new oil cooler arrived today so that will be tomorrow's little job. Having put the EGR back on last week I just couldn't leave it not knowing 100% that it was not leaking. So yesterday I removed it again and pressure tested it using a plumbing pipe pressure test kit.....It works fine, no leaks! At least I know now for sure and should the oil cooler not be the cause of the original issue it only leaves the Head. |

Another update...
Dead oil cooler replaced, new coolant installed and system bled. run the truck up to temp but still only getting intermittent heat in cab and still getting bubbles in the expansion tank! Performed a Co2 test using RELD liquid. this has confirmed that there is exhaust gas getting into the coolant. So, Components changed:- Thermostat Oil cooler and housing Components Checked:- Water pump - spins freely when pulley is spun and will not spin if pulley is stopped pressure tested the EGR Heater valve - operation confirmed by opening and closing when a hose was connected to the inlet Heater Matrix flushed both ways Radiator flushed both ways I am now only left with the cylinder head. I'm guessing the gas getting into the coolant is causing air locks in the system which means every now and then I am not getting water going through the heater matrix and therefore no heat..... tempted to use the "Steel seal" liquid just to see if that resolves the issue and by me some time to fund a new head. Does anyone have any experience of using this? Andy |

Thats annoying!
I recently bought Steel Seal for mine but didn't end up using it. It was recommended by a garage who had used it a couple of times with success. The reason I didn't use it was mainly because my RELD test was coming back negative so not convinced it's my HG. In my research of Steel Seal I found good and bad reviews. I think if I was sure it was my head gasket then I would probably give it a shot. |

So.... I put the "Steel Seal" magic liquid in according to the instructions.
After taking the truck for a few test drives with varying load conditions I re-tested the coolant using the RELD test kit. Quite unexpectedly it returned a negative test result this time....The Steel Seal had worked! (for how long I don't know mind) I'm still getting intermittent heat in the cab which I'm assuming is due to air in the system caused by running the truck prior to the Steel Seal being put in. So more bleeding tomorrow I guess its been an interesting issue this one Happy New Year! |
