Sweden 1999 Defender 110 Td5 PU Coniston Green
Doesn't ignite properly.
Problem
She starts just fine every time, but 10-20sek in the engine warning light turns on and she starts to skip ignitions. I can give her more throttle and she revs just fine, but once she goes back to idle, she goes back to skip ignitions.
When this all started the fuel filter warning light also switched on. But I replaced the fuel filter and disconnected the sensor.

Any ideas on what might be the problem?

1. oil in the red plug engine ecu Question

2. I replaced the fuel filter and disconnected the sensor.( witch sensor Question )

Removed the sensor attached on the bottom of the fuel filter.

all this is for water in your fuel and only shows on the dash no in put ecu so you my have problem with water in fuel tank

The red ecu plug didn’t have any oil on or on it.
Is there an easier way to check water in the fuel tank or do I have to remove the whole tank?

drain fuel filter in to glass jar check for water in the fuel to start with

You my still have problem with injector loom and oil in its plug at front engine under black cover left hand side you will find small square black plug remove the plug and check for oil this can gores poor idling

Thanks again dorsetsmith.
I drained the fuel filter but didn’t see water. The fuel was nice and clear.
The injector loom did have some oil on the contact, which I cleaned.

The issue still remains unfortunately.
I feel like water fits the symptoms, but can’t find any.

Did you try to read fault codes from engine ECU? "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I haven't. It's parked next to a cabin in the woods, and I'm not super confident in getting it to the repair shop with this problem. Might ask them if I can borrow the necessary equipment.

Since there was oil in the contact of the injector loom, is it a good idea to replace it?

The oil is not a problem. Problem could be a poor contact. But before replacing parts, try some diagnostics. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Netherlands 2003 Defender 90 Td5 PU Caledonian Blue
2 free checks you can do before buying parts:

1. disconnect the MAF sensor.
2. disconnect the MAP/MAT sensor

Don't disconnect them at the same time. Very Happy

For both sensors counts: If they completely fail you hardly feel it as the ecu knows it and goes to a default map. If the sensors give wrong readings the ecu might take them as real values and this might cause bad running problems.
If you disconnect the sensor the ecu knows they are not there so goes to the default map. Roel

Tried them both, but no success.
Feels like the waste gate is a little stuck, so I'll work on that tonight. Otherwise I'll take her to the repair shop.

I doubt it will be the wastegate. The spring is tough anyway. The wastegate only makes a difference above say 1500 rpm. Idling the turbo doesn't make pressure so it doesn't matter if the wastegate is open or closed.

I know this is a really stupid question, but I have to take her to the repair shop somehow and the road (max 3km) is not suitable for much other than a defender. Is it a bad idea driving her with this issue and the engine warning lamp lit?
