Are dual mass flywheels installed in 2.4TDCI powered Defenders prone to early failure? If I need to replace one is it possible to install a non dual mass as an alternative? My 36000mile (gently used) Defender, without warning, let out a harsh clunking sound and stopped with no "check engine" dashboard warning. It cranks but no start and heavy clunking sound. Previous experience with dual mass BMW flywheel very poor and expensive and exhibited similar failure symptom.

Sure itโs not the starter motor? They can seize up. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Cranking, clunking and not starting doesn't sound like a flywheel fault to me, nor a starter fault. It is possible that a clutch has destroyed the crankshaft position sensor, but I'd be more inclined to think that it is a broken timing chain or something along those lines.
You can certainly rule out DMF failure, because as commented above it doesn't have one,. |
