Knew Karlos may pop along with the goods. Tried to find it but couldn't remember where it was! Karlos supplied me with the same calculator when I was trying to figure out my wheel/tyre combo. Came in very handy to ensure speedo wasn't thrown wildly out and for fouling etc!  If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Speaking of winter tires for a Defender.... For the standard Defender tire size 235/85R16 there are not too many winter tires around I think. I would appreciate a few suggestions for possible winter tires in that size.
Here in Switzerland, Land Rover do offer as accessory for Defender a set of 4 black steel wheels with one choice of winter tires in that size, which is made by Nokian Hakkapeliitta, but that is actually a winter tire targeting light commercial vehicles (vans) which happens to be produced in this 235/85R16 size. I do use them in the winter on my SVX and not really unhappy with them, but curious about other, maybe better, options for when I will have to change them in a few years time. Tks, Eric |

What is a winter tyre? What is it designed for?
We seem to be getting compacted snow 2-3 weeks of the year around here so I've been driving through fresh snow, until it gets compacted so very slippery then slush. Difficult to get a tyre that can cope with snow getting stuck in the grooves then something that doesn't slip  |

Winter tyre and snow tyres are quite different a winter tyre is designed to give you the edge in winter conditions not just the few weeks of snow it has a high silica content so the tyre stays flexible in cooler temps the groves are designed to shift more water slush etc , there's many threads many debates but some countries a winter tyre is compulsory so a half way house choice is not an option for me. Last year our Bimmers on winter tyres all got around fine the ones that didn't have them on struggled for a few weeks but the main difference was way fewer RTC,s with winter shod units

Ah thanks for that Ken - so whats a good winter tyre for a Defender road use. It would be nice to get something chunky but I suppose thats the last thing you want in cold wet conditions - sorry for picking your brains - quick run off a few examples before K9F tells me off for not doing a search

Comparing a Defender (or any Land Rover) to a BMW or similar when choosing tyres is probably distorting the issue slightly. The former has constant four wheel drive and, in may cases, traction control, so is likely to be more capable than the latter in even the most tame of road tyres.
Notwithstanding the fact that winter tyres are a legal requirement in some countries, in the UK buyng a set for a Defender just seems like overkill when you consider the aggravation of changing them and storing them (let alone the cost!). There are many choices of AT tyres that are perfectly adequate for all year round use, even through the extra flurries of snow that we've had over the last couple of years. Driving in a manner appropriate to the conditions is probably more valuable than different tyres in vehicles like ours. Personally, I'm a big fan of General Grabber AT2's. We have them fitted on my wifes' DII and my outgoing Freelander and we've found them to be excellent come rain, shine or snow. My new Defender also has them fitted so I'm quite looking forward to snow again this winter  Darren

The NH tyres are pretty well respected AFAIK and, in this context, Land Rovers essentially are light commercial vehicles so I wouldn't be too concerned. The only significant difference is likely to be that most light commercials aren't four wheel drive. Don't think ken was trying to compare a BMW to Land Rover, he was pointing out that proper winter tyres, with a snowflake symbol on them, like the Nokians, are designed to remain flexible (due to the silica compound) even when very cold and as a result will perform better than a normal tyre. Even ordinary road cars (without 4 wheel drive) will have better traction with proper tyres in winter,

Darren you missed the point 98%
 of Bimmers stayed on the drives of many users those who had the foresight to fit a correct tyre for the conditions carried on that was the point
we all know have good a defender is in the extremes of weather however the week point quite often stopping this is resolved with the correct tyres I'll argue stongly fitting winter tyres is simply not overkill if you think that winter tyres are just for snow then you have missed the point completly Each to their own oh have you checked the sidewall of the AT2 as some are winter rated (mountain snowflake) |

Just checked and by no pre-planning skills on my part, my BFG AT's have a snowflake within a mountain symbol Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

Never been a fan of the AT2 because of the soft sidewalls after a conversation with AJS Andy the reason for the softer walls became clear they were winter rated
However like the Goodyear duratracs I have although they are winter rated they arent the same as nokians etc however given the capabilities of the Defender it's European legislation I need to counter the Defender will do thecrest The mobile kennel (Vito) will be on full winters and will go were no X5 toe rag will even try |

My BFH ATs are winter marked. (Snowflake Mountain Symbol) I lived in a Ski Resort for 3 winters and i found them very good. Most other defenders in the Village ran with them also. The other popular Choise was the Coopers. Our Company Defender had them and i found them very good, especially when breaking! They seem to wear quicker though! Yeah, I do appreciate that. What I was getting at though was that winter tyres for Land Rovers (as per Zagatos' question) don't need to be specialised winter tyres in this country.
With respect, I don't think so. I know about the problems that BMW's (and Mercs) had in the snow, ice, slush, etc. I live on a hill and all that power through the rear wheels made for many comedy moments. As you point out though, AT2's are winter rated and all I was getting at, perhaps not very clearly, was that there are many tyres for Land Rovers that are suitable for use all year round in the UK without the need for a second set of wheels and tyres. I appreciate that the conditions and legal requirements differ in other countries and, I'm guessing from your signature, that you have some need in that regard.
