Quick question about removing headlining
Been trying to build up the minerals for a while to remove my headlining in order to finish off sound proofing. My quick question is - in order to get the very back section of roof lining off, do I first need to remove the small bit of trim on the very back panel at the top?

Yes, get some spare fir tree clips and one of those trim removal tools before you start - it’ll pay off.

Are you taking the headliner off the car completely? Will be interested to see how you managed. I tried on a 90, but the rear door opening is too small for the headliner to pass through, without bending it to the point that becomes a fold. Since I was taking the roof off anyway, I decided to remove the roof to take out the headliner in fear that I would damage it. So good to know if there is a way to remove the headliner without removing the roof and without damaging the headliner. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I managed to get mine out through the back door. You have to be very delicate not to crease it but it can be done.

I've had the headlining out of mine a couple of times (and need to do so again for another project Rolling Eyes ). The individual sections will very definitely fit through the back door.

Removing the rear section in a 110 is quite complicated. Yes, you need to remove the trim above the rear door, which also requires removal of the trims either side of the door. However, because of the way that they overlap, it's also necessary to remove the centre section, which in turn requires all of the side trims to be removed. None of it's difficult but it is fiddly and time consuming.

I'd definitely recommend using a trim removal tool for the fir tree fixings and also unbolting the lower seatbelt mounts so that the seatbelts can be threaded through the side trims to allow them to be lifted out of the way. Darren

Thanks for all the responses - unusually for me I actually bought enough fir trees to replace the lot if needed and proper trim removal tool before starting. Removed the lower seatbelt bolt got the side trims off and got all the for trees out with only one or two breakages. Cannot budge the middle section though...maybe being too timid. Having a bowl of porridge now to build up the strength!

Did my 110 headlining last week in Alcantata. Was ok. But you need a decent tool and you will break the clips.

First step it to remove all the side panelling that is close to the top. This is the bits above the doors. The large square bits. The rear window panels etc.. requires the seatbelts to be removed. The large square bits just lift up and out. The rear window sections just pull. Nothing is too complicated as long as you check the clips are out.

For a 110 you need to remove the middle headlining section first as it overlaps the front and rear.
Then remove the telephone rear section. Secured by the fur tree clips and the handles.

The rear headlining section then can we wiggled free. And out of the back door. Without removing the side bits you really have to bend it and it may well break.

If I can do it then so can you. 👍 while you have it out it may be worth covering it.... the jobs never end..

Finally managed to haul out that middle section yesterday and the other two bits were easy after that. Got the soundproofing up and headliners back in position. Now about to embark on redoing all the trim and the car will be back to normal(but quieter maybe) for the Xmas period - when I won’t be able to drive anywhere!

Thanks for all the help and encouragement. This forum really is a brilliant resource!

I did the back of mine. Sound deadening and insulation throughout and then Capet then a decent load liner.

Makes a world of difference, no condensation, holds warmth better and much quieter.

Worth the effort

Thumbs Up

Being honest I’ve not gone far enough tell. Only 4 miles and that was without all the trim back in. It’s bound to make a difference though. As for being worth the effort, I’d say so. I now know how to strip the car out back to its shell and then put it all back again. Frustrating at times but probably worth it!
