10p TD5 90 have just lost drive in high and low box, however if diff lock is engaged, still have high and low box and the car drives

Could be a failure in a diff, a CV joint, a snapped half shaft or even one of the drive flanges. With one front wheel jacked up, turn the wheel by hand and see if you hear any grinding noises. Darren

problem is at the front end
front diff magnetic drain plug covered in swarf front wheels of the ground , when either wheel turned, nothing else rotates same with front propshaft strip down tomorrow looks like a failed front diff 1999 90 TD5 CSW 2006 110 TD5 HD Commercial |

Oh dear, front diff. Unusual on a TD5 90 but that'll be no comfort. There are many upgrade options if you're so inclined, and cheaper than new genuine parts.

A common issue with front Rover diffs are the crown wheel bolts loosening and consequently shearing.
It happened to ours last year. Symptoms were some loud bangs in the transmission. Oil was as clean as could be, but the diff pan contained broken bolts and pieces of gear teeth. They didn't come out with the oil since the drain hole is not the lowest point . You might want to check with a small magnet. A while ago a bloke on another forum had all the crown wheel bolts broken, but miraculously the gears survived unscathed. Other possibility are broken differential gear pins. I too thought it was the transfer case first, so I ended up rebuilding that too. I even drove a couple of weeks with the front drive shaft only during which time nothing special happened, so the logical conclusion was that it was the TC's diff. I was almost disappointed when it turned to be OK.

Ashcroft ATB is an obvious upgrade and cheaper than a genuine LR diff, and much stronger than the original 2-gear diff. |
