I have one. Its brilliant.
Got 285/75/16 tyres, std diff ratios, higher 5th, 1.3 box. Pulls very well, speedo reads bang on. My 110s also often heavy laden, however also heavily tuned. Its a nice middle ground between 1.2 and 1.4 Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

Ashrcoft do a 1.3 and 1.1 I believe.
Have the Ashcroft 1.3 one sat on garage floor still waiting to go in Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Hi James - I've got a 1.3 in my 110 Dormobile with a TGV in it, its a perfect compromise. I tried the 1.2 and it was just too high sluggish. To be honest I prefer it to my TD5 90 which has a 1.4 but is on 35's .

I assume you mean 3.54 diffs? What gearbox do you have in there - I'm assuming MT82?
I've got a 1.2 transfer box, 265/75s in my 300Tdi with an R380 and in the current setup wouldn't change it, the only downside is that 1st is really tall. It's a bit of a pain when towing a large load but manageable. With the MT82 Land Rover did what a lot of people had been doing in putting in a 1.2 transfer box - except by using the 6 speed they've actually kept the upper gears more or less the same ratio as the R380 but dropped first lower. So you'll "lose" top end speed (or rather will be revving higher) so it depends, if you're always towing 2T then I guess you're "limited" to 60mph so a 1.3 would help with accelerating and general usability, probably. But without a trailer or if you cruise a bit faster then the engine will be revving higher. I've got a spreadsheet that plots all the gears if you wanted to try playing with some numbers? Been trying to decide whether I should be going back to a 1.4 or even a 1.6 transfer box when I do my engine swap since it'll theoretically be capable of 70mph in low range with the rev range of the new engine Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

Sorry yes, 3.54.
I ran two tgvs not long ago. One on 35s, 4.11s and 1.4 box, the other 33s, 3.54s and 1.4 box, both felt pretty equal. My 130 towing a fair bit, 50% of mileage is heavy anyway. Its on std 235.85s and puma box mt82 with 3.54s and std 1.2 currently. It sits at 60/65 on most long runs anyway. Thinking the 1.3 will make it a little more spirited up to speed even if its 100rpm more at 60 than it was. Should also hold it better in torque band at cruising 60mph I took the plunge and ordered one, support seal gone on current one anyway. Think lockdown has just given me the time to do it so hopefully will be on it next week. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

I think if I had your situation I might do the same - or shove a bigger engine in there Ed

1.3 box is in and it works like a dream, far better suited to my 130 from an engine output, ratio match perspective.
Also fitted the ashcroft intermediate coupling no slack in the driveline now! (already have Ashcroft shafts, DMs, CVs, low pinion rear an build up front diff.) Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Just a further update on this.
Vehicle has 65k on it and there didn't seem to be much play in the drivetrain having already replaced diffs, shafts, cvs, dms with ashcroft items. Fitted this box and first real noticeable thing was how much tighter everything seemed to be. Now an ashcroft intermediate shaft went in as well but the old one didn't seem too bad. So was the original lt230 that worn/slack? I know many on here have passed comments of improvements after fitting an ATB ashcroft Lt230, my observations would be its just the box , ATB or not, that is that much better. Gearing has been greatly improved, more so than I thought the small change I ratio would make. Its the same comparison as a remap engine over std tune to me the gearing has made that much difference. Have now done a bit of towing with it, not much over 2t, its just so much better now, really impressed, vehicle holds the gears better and sits 8n that max torque band so much better. Towing around 3t tomorrow over Devon Hilly terrain, so will see how that goes, but so far really impressed. Well done Ashcrofts, a superb ratio for my application, vehicle works so much better, thank you. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

In my experience a properly shimmed LT230 centre diff with an unworn housing makes a massive difference to the driveline slop.
Some people don’t realise that the centre diff should feel notchy when correctly set up outside the box. Do you notice any noise difference between the old 1.2 gears which would’ve been a “Q” set and the 1.3? |

to be honest i thought the new box was quieter but then its hard to tell as vehicle is pretty quiet anyway, i went overboard on the rebuild. Cheers

Well she worked a treat today towing, not quite the 3T but plenty heavy enough. Really pleased with the T box ratio. Cheers

You're making me wish I put a 1.3 set in when I rebuilt my LT230 in the summer > 110 XS Double Cab |
