109
I’d quite like a Series 3 109 5 door station wagon, preferably petrol (ideally 6cyl but not essential). I’m not looking for a £30k Williams Classics job, something a bit rougher around the edges will do.

Should I seek help?

Yes, you should seek help.

If not, I'll meet you in the madhouse.

Perfect. I assume it is surplus to requirements and in need of regular use? I can offer it a bit of shooting, lugging the odd hay bales around and family days out? 😊

Not sure about the Stage 1 V8, there is something honest about the smaller petrol engines and I’ve always enjoyed a struggle 😬.

It seems there are few about that haven’t had a 200 or 300 tdi dropped in. Prices seems all over the place too. Did many get exported to Australia or had the Aussies fallen out of love with LR by then?

Well, it was on eBay some years ago and just South of Chelmsford, which is not too far from me.

It was outside and neglected and in a bramble patch.

It was cheap because it had a seized Perkins diesel engine in it, the overdrive had been stolen and the gearbox was knackered, but its chassis number meant it was worth saving:

With a Station Wagon (please no-one call it a Safari. Land Rover never did) the important thing is the interior - as metal is easier to mend or replace. Fortunately this one had a lot of the original interior.

Having been into these things for a lifetime, I have many contacts. My Dutch friends found the original pieces of the interior trim that were missing. All reasonable second-hand, so no need for any shiny bright and wrong-looking new Exmoor stuff.

I swapped a full set of SII hoodsticks and sharkstooth rail, for a period correct 2.25 petrol engine. It was from another friend and out of a scrapped Station Wagon. I replaced the core plugs and rear main bearing seal and bunged it in.
It has run fine.

The early style steps were the hardest thing. I had to have two made.

It's still rather rough around the edges and needs finishing, but it took me to the SII Club Rally in Rutland in 2018 with no dramas. Has been in the corner of the shed since then, as I have too many other projects.

Not for sale I'm afraid as I will get it out again, do a bit more work on it and use it again.

I do hope you find what you are looking for, but remember they are cumbersome beasts!
