TD5 Squealing
Morning folks,

My TD5 has a squealing noise - seems to happen when accelerating, and then when you turn it off, there is a short squealing noise.

Is it likely to just be a belt, or could it be bearings in something?

Short squeal will be the crank pulley - it has a rubber damper in it.

The long squeal on acceleration will most likely be an exhaust manifold leak - have a look around the edge of it for signs of soot. You’ll probably find a broken stud or two as well. Dave

Lovely. Do Defender TD5's suffer the same manifold warping as the Discoveries?

It does feel a little down on power sometimes, so i wonder if it is a manifold leak causing lack turbo.

Thanks.

Yes they do, unfortunately. Depending on the size of the leak it could in theory reduce boost pressure. Main symptom when my old Td5 had the same problem was the whistle/squealing sound. Dave

There is a good troubleshooting article in LRO International this month, especially warped manifolds and broken studs. Jeff

Check at either end of the exhaust manifold for soot or loose/broken studs.

I don’t think it’s manifold, I can’t see any obvious signs of an issue.

I am beginning to think it’s either belt related, or pulley / tensioner.

Seems to be worse after a bit of water, so am guessing a belt is slipping or a pulley bearings are shot.

Drive Belt tensioner or idler or alt bearings are shot. remove belt and check each bearing
