I logged in here this morning and it said my last login was in 2010, which was when I was considering returning to the LR fold after a brief dalliance with a Porsche Cayenne. For various reasons, I ended up with a TDV8 Range Rover instead. But the Defender bug is still there and a change of circumstances means that I now get to choose for myself.
I've been doing the usual thing of scanning classifieds, eBay, Auto Trader etc. I've also read lots of useful guides on here about what to look for, especially in the Puma-engined Defenders, which is what I'm leaning towards. I've seen this one for sale online: https://www.nwd4x4.co.uk/detail/1167796/us...rossendale It ticks quite a few boxes as it has the full XS spec (although not stated), towing electrics and it's a 110 so I can chuck a bike in the back, use it for dump runs or visits to Ikea. But there are a few alarm bells going off: - 45k miles in 13 years seems really low mileage; maybe it's been a 2nd or 3rd car and genuinely not used much; or it's spent a lot of time being fixed by a local garage - 6 owners in 13 years also seems excessive; I know from my Range Rover that I passed it on pretty quickly due to persistent electrical issues and also know that the subsequent owner shifted it rapidly as it appeared on the same forecourt I purchased it from within a year; so 6 owners suggests something is not quite right, or maybe the previous owners just wanted to share the love, and often - £19k for an XS-spec 110 seems cheap, compared to others I've seen online; I'm not doubting the credentials of the seller, but this does seem way below market value - Chequer plate on the rear doors; this is often used to hide rust and/or paint blemishes, although I thought this era of Defender had steel doors; maybe someone thought it needed a cosmetic boost - It has an OK MOT history; nothing major appears to have gone wrong or failed and anything that has been reported seems to have been addressed by the next test; it was MOT-ed this week with 2 advisories (both front hub gaiters deteriorated; Nearside Rear Wheel bearing has slight play) - Seems to be some surface rust underneath; seller says they'll Waxoyl it but I don't want to just cover it up if the problem is deeper; then again, I've seen worse on previous cars I've owned - No interior pictures, which the seller says is because it's awaiting prep, so fair enough Any thoughts? I can go and see it this weekend, socially distanced of course, but don't want to make a 260 mile round trip for a lemon. And glad to be back (potentially). |

My opinion, honestly, seems legit.

That's a County rather than an XS - I'd expect the seats and steering wheel to be non-leather and then cosmetically the grill, headlight surrounds and bonnet letters are the wrong colour. None of that is a problem as long as you know what you're getting and goes some way to explaining the price.
I'd hazard a guess that the chequer plate in front of the rear wheels means that the original panels have corroded away, which is common if the underside in that area isn't kept clean and/or protected. The mileage is pretty low although not unprecedented. Coupled with the number of owners does make it look a bit odd, though. Approach with caution is the best I can offer. I would be very cautious buying from NWD search Rossendale on here and see lots of negatives about them Andy

Wow, thanks for all the quick feedback.
Yes, it is a County, I just checked on comparethemarket; didn't think you could get heated seats/screen on a County. Will also do some research into the company. |

The rear door chequer plate will be to cover the corrosion on the rivets dripping down the doors.
Also the c pillars are probably worth checking, lift the carpet behind the doors next to the seat footings. |

I live just a couple of miles from that dealer, and I never even bothered going to look when I bought mine, after searching on here... Anyway...
For what it's worth, my view is that unless you are going to pay top dollar for a mint Puma from one of the reputable dealers, you'd be better off buying private. You'll get a better car for your money if you look carefully, and less likely to come across the mutton dressed as lamb, done up for a quick buck. OK, you wont have the same consumer protection, but trying to get that from an unhelpful dealer is a recipe for high blood pressure anyway. I'd rather do my checks and take the chance with a private sale. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

I think this County will be without aircon, half - leather seats, leather steering wheel, rear door net and perhaps upgraded ICE unit although most of these were available as added options. XS also got ABS/traction control but not sure what year these came in. County did not get these until about 2014. Good luck with your hunt. |

If in doubt - forget it and move on. You've waited 10 years so looking round for another few months should be no hardship. Good luck with your hunt. Defender 90XS SW

See you in 2030 then...?!
Joking apart, I occasionally have a look to see what's for sale, and by gum there's some shiny and vastly overpriced dross out there, even just from the poor photos. I'm sure there's still plenty of goods ones too though. Best of luck. |
