Don't know whether it is common or not; no leaks on my 2012 90.
If it is gearbox, important to get it sorted as there is no way to check the gearbox oil level. Only way to know you have the right gearbox oil level is to drain and refill. |

I think it's assembly lube... My Bowler has the same... I've wiped it clean and will monitor for any further signs of oil
Cheers Tim It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse... 2013 Bowler 110 (Sold) 2016 Bowler 90 Rally Spec (Sold) |

It does seem quite common on recent vehicles for assembly lube to come out from there for a while.
The drain hole drains the empty space that contains the infamous output adaptor shaft coupling, and there are really only three things which could leak from there: 1 - gearbox oil, if the rear oil seal on the main gearbox is leaking (fairly unusual), 2 - transfer box oil, if the transfer box input seal is leaking (not unusual), 3 - some form of assembly lube used on the output adaptor shaft (seems to be common on late buld vehciles). It doesn't look the right colour for 1 or 2 to me, so I think that 3 is the most likely. I have a suspicion that LR has had so much criticism of the lack of lube on assemly of the adaptor shaft that in the final days they slopped huge quantities on intentionally to make it leak out of the drain hole, so at least you knoew it was lubricated. |

Apologies for the thread resurrection, and I know it’s a long shot, but did you find out what this was?

That does look like liquified grease residue fluid. (Liquifies perhaps when hot).
Perhaps the LR gearbox output shaft grease as others mentioned earlier. Anyone know what colour it is? At one time it was just a typical grease but LR now provide one with a PN. I’m guessing it’s like a one shot sachet of grease or something. Unless the oil has an additive in it, but I doubt that. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

I’ve spoken to the guy who did my output shaft and apparently it is an assembly grease/Andy seize paste sort of thing that comes with the LR replacement shaft. And it is blue.
Mine blue oil is thin, similar to the oil in my LT230, so the consensus is that is leaking from the input seal and either tracking down the shaft and picking up some blue grease colour on the way, or more likely the grease has been applied so liberally for fear of the shaft eating itself that it has been thrown all over the inside of the adaptor housing and is staining the oil as it dribbles over it. The other thing that points to the LT230 is that the blue oil is clean. The oil in the LT230 was also clean. The oil in my gearbox, which was about 30k old was much darker brown, dirty oil. |
