Pulley Noise Possibly?
Hi All,

I have a problem with my 2.4 TDci Defender 130's motor. When its hot it sometimes makes a squealing type sound - almost like a piece of wire is dragging on the ground. Every time I hear it, the first thing I think of is a pulley is making a noise. It seems to change with revs. I can sometimes hear it at idle also.

It is not the turbo gasket which has been checked and what makes it difficult to diagnose is that it doesnt happen all the time. It maybe fine for weeks then suddenly it stops, and other times it only stops when the revs are below 2000 and clutch is depressed. It doesnt change or get louder under acceleration and only seems to do it when I have been travelling at hiway speeds for a while.

I have already replaced the tensioner pully and the idler pullies have been checked. What else do you think it could be before I start going and replacing parts unnecessarily. My thought was to replace all the idler pulleys first.

Mileage is just over 120k kms.

Worst thing is, is that I am heading for the bush tomorrow on a 800km round trip and dont want problems.

Thank you. "Overlanding With Bruce" - Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@OverlandingwithBruce

From your description it is a similar sound to that which my fan pulley bearings were making before I replaced them. If it is, be aware that it is possible to replace the bearings, although Landrover in its wisdom only sells the complete front plate assembly (at huge cost). Pressing out the old bearings, and pressing the new is not difficult and the bearings are not expensive.

Thank you very much for the reply.

Is there any way of diagnosing it before replacing? "Overlanding With Bruce" - Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@OverlandingwithBruce

Only by taking the serpentine belt of and spinning each pulley in turn. I found it almost impossible to tell where the noise was coming from with the engine running, since the total engine noise is overwhelming.

Thank you Blackwolf.

Yeah I know what you mean. I had the company that services my landy do that already and all ok apparently.

So I have bought spares for the trip just incase. I have also bought a water pump to take along incase also.

Fingers crossed.

The fan pulley bearing is making a lot of sense though as I assume its only under load when the fan is on, so that would explain the intermittent noise when travelling on the highway and after a long run.
