Personally I wouldn't get my defender wrapped only painted, reason being when the inevitable happens (rust/bubbling) the wrap would start to lift and look tatty.
On the other hand the paint bubbling and panel rust also looks tatty anyway. I've only seen one defender wrapped matt black before and the wrap was lifting all over the place, the truck was white originally so it looked awful! Also the more expensive durable wraps that do actually last will probably cost around the same as a paint job. If you go cheap on a wrap it will start to lift easily, speaking from previous experience! Advantage of wrapping is the colours/patterns/effects are far wider like chrome/satin/matt etc, but anyone who had a chrome defender needs shooting

Mine is plastidipped.
Much, much cheaper than wrap. Can be applied yourself. Can also be refreshed yourself when it either gets scratched or fails. And can be peeled just the same. It's hard to do anything other than solid Matt colours, but we sprayed clear dip over my Santorini and the paint underneath is unmarked despite it having been through seemingly every bush in the Pyrenees. We would prefer 3m self healing wrap, but that's £600\roll (plenty to do 2 defenders) and has the drawbacks you describe. But it would look vastly better on. |

I wrapped my roof black and it's brilliant. Like a waterproof protective barrier.
However when I informed my insurance broker (A Plan) they said most places won't cover you for a wrap as if one panel get damaged you generally have to re-wrap the entire car due to subtle colour changes over time. Not sure why this should be any different from Paint but in their view it was. Just check with your broker before going for a full wrap. |

FWIW I had my arches wrapped about five years ago. I think I paid about £30 a pop, they still look good.
