Hi All
Would this level of black smoke be caused by a failing MAF or should I keep looking? MAF is reading low ie 38-40 at idle and 130-140 at 2000rpm so I've just ordered a new VDO/Siemens one which will be here mid next week all being well, but will it cure this or do I need to look elsewhere? I still have the stock intercooler and CAT etc etc at the mo and as far as I know its not been mapped etc its just passed 108k miles https://photos.app.goo.gl/emx3YZN5vozfi3CC8 Cheers Ben |

ps I did fit a IRB EGR blank the other week as I thought it may be caused by the EGR valve initially...

I see you pushed the throttle quite hard twice. The second time you held the throttle a bit longer, and the exhaust cleared before you let off the throttle. Does it smoke if you push the throttle ‘slower’ but still gets high rpm? If no, I would say normal behavior.
Make sure you are not clearing sooth from the exhaust, especially if it was driven lightly. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

not sure, I'll have to have a try
I don't think it had done anything more than local running about for the past year or so, it was breathing quite heavily when I got it, that has now stopped after a few good runs so some of it could be down to short runs etc I guess I think theres a boost leak somewhere as well (you can hear the squeal) not sure whether its a hose or manifold at this stage but will all be checked over the next few weeks Likely to get new boost hoses/intercooler and exhaust soon anyway. You should check the possible boost leak. Such a leak would influence the fuel/air ratio, so that under hard acceleration the fuel supplied by the injectors would be greater than the air required so that unburnt fuel in the form of black smoke would be more than normal in the exhaust.
That said, the MAF readings are low, as pointed out by other posters. Cheers, Lionel |

Low MAF reading should not give you too much diesel.
I would: Check the air filter disconnect the MAf check for air leaks between the turbo and inlet manifold. Is your turbo still working properly? Good power above 200o rpm? Quick update new MAF fitted today, perfect 58-60 reading at idle, drives better and the smoke has cleared up just a puff when it comes on boost then pulls clean.
Cheers all |
