I did a bit of research on the subject of snorkels and managed to get the info I required by using the search function. From what I read the safari's seem to be better but I preferred the look of the Mantec even though I had read about problems with the fit and gap.
I fitted the Mantec this afternoon and what should be an easy job is complicated by the very poor instructions and what I can only describe as a bad design. I have read about the rather large gap and I was expecting it, but I could not quite believe it.
When I positioned the snorkel against the wing the gap was small ,and it would have been a very neat finish, but the top section that needs bolting to the window frame was on the window screen. If I could have bolted it there then great, it would have been a neat finish, but the problem was that it needs to be in line with the frame and bolted to the frame. When you push it in lign with the frame it makes the bottom pull away from the wing, making the gap bigger, much much bigger. The gap just looks wrong and far too big, I tried reducing the gap by tightening the two screws that hold it to the wing, but this just made the wing fixings pop out of the holes i drilled. So i ended up putting a lot more mastic behind it, and wedging it as tight as I could. I will look tomorrow and see if it has held in place. I will still get some black mastic and tidy it up though.
I am fairly competent at DIY I have renovated numerous houses and built my own house, so I can make things and fix things. I was also a time served panel beater in my younger days so I can turn my hand to most jobs on a car, just so you know that the problem fitting the Mantec is unlikely to be me. Mantec just need to tweek it slightly and improve the instructions. Two very easy things to do and then they will have a very good product, but until they do there will be more stories of the thing not fitting correctly. 59 reg 90 XS Station Wagon
