Have a look at the posts about the vcv valve on here.
Sounds suspect. |

I replaced the vcv valve last year, as the defenders idle speed was very erratic, replacing this valve solved the idle speed problem.

The first thing to do is check what if and DTCs are stored in the ECU, otherwise it's just guesswork.

As above check codes.
What conditions does it occur under? Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Mine did this just randomly lost power,
No fault codes, nothing, all dials go off then sometimes would restart on its own other times I restart it. Could do it 3 times in a 20 mile trip or once in 3 months... Mine was a new ignition barrel. Changed this and no issues since |

What conditions : Normal driving, happens randomly can be over a month and no issues, then twice in a week, dealership hopeless as no fault codes therefore not interested. I am completely bamboozled, as it goes like a train after you have stopped at the side of the road and restarted it.

Stacey007's reply above has identified a very likely culprit. Fiddly to fix but not expensive. Darren

Grounding points being loose and or battery clamps is another possibility, an easy enough thing to check at least and free.
Ideally some Dielectric grease too, and checking all main HD fuses are secure. MAF and Map sensors are clean, and maybe even the alternator live stud too. The electrical side can have a significant impact on the performance due to the fuelling system ECU etc. I expect the above posts maybe very possible and likely even to be the issue. But the things Iโve suggested are worth checking just in case and wonโt cost anything. Take a look at the air filter too.
