Are they 16 or 18 twisted rims? Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

They’re pretty firm but nice and supportive, the seating position is raised and I felt like I was perched on top of the thing at first. Now I’ve done a few miles with my bum in the seat I’m quite used to them and very happy.

Race.it
They’re 18” twisted wheels

Fox shocks, Eibach standard height springs and Eibach anti-roll bar from Alive fitted.
And, wow. What a transformation.

Picking the vehicle up my first impressions were that it felt significantly firmer, very much more tied down and planted. It now feels much more secure, there’s noticeably less body roll and wandering about but I was initially struggling to determine what the comfort springs were bringing to the party.

A few more miles spent behind the wheel and the improvements were beginning to show themselves, the harsh bouncy ride has been smoothed out ever so slightly, it’s still no Range Rover but it is certainly more comfortable. What surprised me the most though was that it just gets better the more you push on, the ride improves the faster you go, in that it begins to iron out the undulations in the road rather than bounce over them, the feeling that it’s going to be thrown off course if you hit a pothole is gone.

I imagine the better damping has most part to play in the improved ride but there is also a much better turn in and sharper direct feel to the steering, no doubt from the anti-roll bar and aided by the firmer damping. The wallowing uncertainty of making it around a corner is gone. And again, it seems to get better the quicker you go (or maybe it’s the feeling that you can if you wish, carry so much more speed than you’re used to). I can understand why this is generally marketed as a ‘fast road suspension package’. I don’t particularly hoon about in the defender, but it does inspire more confidence and increases the fun factor.

It’s also interesting to note that whilst I’ve got standard height springs, the rear does now sit approx 20mm lower, it’s now more level rather than the nose down stance.

I’m still waiting for a full super-pro bush kit to be delivered, the intentions were to fit everything in a oner but there seems to be some delays in the supply of these. But, I’m now wondering if I really need firmer bushes? The last thing I’d want to do is re-introduce some harshness by reducing the give in the bushes. I wanted to tighten everything up but I’ve already gained all the improvements I could hope for with the shocks/springs.
