Refitting rear bumper step
I've resprayed the rear crossmember and bumper step, now refitting the step. Step was the LR replacement for the original factory fitted bumper step, so should be standard.

I'm having a problem with the bolts on the extreme right and left. There are two plates - one goes on the outside between the step and the crossmember, the other goes on the inside. I can't work out how the one on the inside fits. I assume it's on the bolt to spread the load from the nut, but there doesn't appear to be space as there's other stuff in the way.

I've downloaded the instructions for the Britpart step as it appears to be the same one. At the stage where it shows fitting the plates, there's a question mark!

I've looked at loads of pictures online, but none seem to include this 2nd plate.

Any clues?

I thought the plates were just optional shims to be used where necessary between the rear crossmember and the bumper?

The only thing that goes into the space between the two faces of the rear crossmember are the spacers to stop you pulling the two faces together when tightening the end bolts and adding some rigidity.

These are the spacers:

Have they dropped down when you took the bumper off?

Like Supacat, it was my understanding that those plates are simply shims to fit between the end of the step and the crossmember to address the clever "warped crossmember" manufacturing "feature" introduced with the Td5.

The revised rear body mounts (the adjustable angle strip instead of welded tabs) was done for the same reason.

^^ This. Those plates are used if needed (hence the ? in the instructions) to fill the gaps Laughing  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

You couldn't make this stuff up if you tried! I guess the extra paint has probably made up some of the difference and I only need one of them now. I had a lot of trouble getting the old bolt out (used a hammer), so the plates just dropped out.

I'll do some more before work tomorrow.

thanks all for the help.

Thanks all for your help. Finished the refitting before work today. First time I've used aerosol paint for anything visible, very please with the results.
It's been a bit of a trial as putting my head under a vehicle seems to be a guaranteed trigger of a migraine, so it's been a bit at a time and stop as soon as I start to feel ill.

Next up will be the rear corner cappings - bit more of a challenge!
