The upcoming introduction of mandatory speed limiters on new cars will (at least to begin with) be a push override type system. You will feel a resistance under your foot if you try to accelerate beyond the speed limit. You can still exceed the speed limit if you push through the resistance, but the idea is that mentally you'll get used to not doing and just stick within the law. It would be interesting to know how much pollution and global warming is caused by the manufacture, running and scrapping of a new vehicle with an average 13.9 year life expectancy (SMMT Data from 2015 so a little out of date), compared to say a 20 or 30 year old + Defender.
Are the exhaust emissions the main contributor throughout the whole life, or does the production and scrapping activity make up the lion's share of whole life emissions?
AFAIK there is far more in the manufacture and disposal of vehicles than its lifetime of use........
This to me means that a well serviced older vehicle (even the worst emissions offender) will be far more 'green' than the nuclear family changing their cars every two minutes........

Of course it will be the greener option, but obviously this is not good for the economy if people kept their cars for much longer, and to be honest, that applies to all consumer goods which is why they seem to be less repairable these days and pander to a fickle and gullible society....
Ever wondered why your iPhone has to fill itself up with "updates" to to keep working to a point where its over full so you "need" a new one....
