I plan to keep this car for a long time so I’m giving it a gentle run-in over the first 1,500 miles and haven’t pushed the engine to anywhere near its limit yet. Hard to say at this stage how it compares to the D250 or D300, but it’s certainly got some poke.

l've got the D250 and have never used all the performance in 14,000 miles.

l would recommend you do at least one oil change before the official 2 years/21,000 mile first service.
l had the oil and filter changed at 5,000 and again at 10,000.

I do not agree with this, I would not change the oil in advance, it is a waste of money, I would not do it unless I observed problems with dilution, etc….something that does not seem to be happening in the I6 MHEV!!

You are free to run your engine's oil into the ground, just as some people are free to change it as often as they'd like. Gotta love freedom of choice, no?

For example, I changed the factory filled oil out at 20 (twenty) miles. Its was watery, and should have saved a sample to send to blackstone, but.. meh. That soupy mess was replaced with Valvoline racing oil (high Zinc content), and Royal Purple engine break-in oil. Not a RP nuthugger, but couldn't find enough of either locally for the whole procedure, so I had to do some mixing.

Then, after the engine was broken in, I changed it again at 52 miles. That was done with 5qts of conventional 5-20 oil and 3.5 qts of remaining Valvoline oil.

At 550 miles, another oil/filter change happened. This time, the engine received 8.5 qts of Mobil 1 0-20.

So, three oil changes inside of 550 miles. Stupid Yanks, wasting all of that money, right?

Blimey! Shocked I think thats obsessive but your choice Thumbs Up . I've never done anything other than manufacturers changes. I keep my cars well into high mileages, usually 150,000 +

Since 2005 they have all been Discovery 3 / 4 (other than a XC90). One I sold at 231,000 miles and is still going strong as are all the others. My defender is currently on 34,000 miles in 18 months. If I keep it then it will be on the same basis.

Anyway, horses for courses. Thumbs Up Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

The same can be said by here, my LR D3 TDV6 left for its second owner with 400,000 km with the original engine, never 1€ was spent on an extra oil change, always 24,000 km or 1 year…in those 18 years of ownership, many colleagues here, infected by the “worried LR” virus, I saw their oils changed at 12,000 or 6 months…and many of them saw their engine die at an early age…others did not…I always followed the instructions given to me by the car dictated by the manufacturer LR, that is, surely everything is part of a design plan motivated by spurious and unspeakable interests…within a great malevolent world plan…that without a doubt!! Cool

… That said, and, I won't enter into a polemic on this matter either...
