So I know this is not normal but when I hit about 3750-4000 rpm I get a vibration thats making the transfer case leaver vibrate violently, if I hold the leaver the vibration seams to vanish. I know the transfer case has been out as I have it noted in the service history but question is do they do that? I guess no, if so any ideas where to check? Something misaligned, from what I could see nothing looks loose. Anybody else has this, have seen vibrations due to propshafts etc but that’s normally seen at lower rpm from what I gather.
Next time I’ll try to get a video/recording of it. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing. 5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

I have a similar problem, which appeared after swapping out the clutch and output shaft (obv it also all had to come out for that).
Mine is around 2,500prm, under acceleration just before changing up into 3rd and 4th. Its a rumble or vibration coming from under the seatbox/through the gear stick. Hope you get it sorted as it drives me insane! |

Thanks for the replies
I’ll have to do some more testing. Don’t like to just rev it, but I guess they should be able to hit 4500rpm no issues, I have seen transits at 16,000rpm 😂 Thanks again. From memory it does it in more than one gear and at roughly 3750rpm and up, not tried to drive through it. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

So basic testing today think it’s prob transfer or gearbox side. Will swap oils next week and see what I get out. If I drop the clutch the noise vanishes and engine revs no probs past 4000 with no load on it. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

So going out today that my turbo heat shield is only held on umbrella 2 of i guess 3 bolts/nuts so this is flapping in the wind maybe that’s a cause of this vibration.
Also decided to drain oil out of transfer case, about 0.5 liters so that also would not of being helping... Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing. 5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

Thanks gear stick does not seam to vibrate, transfer leaver did. Got to road test it later with correct level of oil to see if that helps Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

So vibration is better.
New turbo heat shield fitted noticed that the bracket that holds it on also is missing a bolt so will get that. The drive train still vibrates at about 4000rpm but thinking that could be transfer case or prop shaft but the metallic sound that accompanied it has now been reduced massively. How often do you need to run it up to 4000rpm? Darren

Ok so now all bolts are in the heat shield and the manifold and the vibration at 4000rpm has gone.
There was a m8x20 missing on the metal strip that holds the heat shield on that and the new heat shield solved the issue. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing. 5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |
