“ Already done - it came out of a Range Rover and has the little cut outs in the inlet ports where the injectors sit. The other part is the CR stampede in the block. See - that makes me sound like an expert!”
...and both features shared with the 3.5. ID using an engine number would denote an expert 😉😀😀 JB @Lodelaner Instagram Youtube greenlaning and other LR related content |

Oh yes - a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and I'm positively lethal!! ![]() I should've said - I did check that too before committing money - it starts 36D2 and has the correct CR. 90 V8 CSW - 1988 |

Having a load of spares doesn't always help you
![]() From memory I used 3/8" UNC x 4" socket cap, high tensile bolts to mount my 4.6 onto the engine stand. The length you need will depend on the engine stand you have but you can always pack them out with washers etc. I think you'll find its a UNC thread into the block and a UNF thread on the gearbox end of the stud. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

Thanks, I’ve just added some twin port manifolds to improve the sound and they will be in place for the new motor. 90 V8 CSW - 1988

So, after a while the block and heads have gone for testing.
The bad news is it will need a re-bore. I suppose actually it's not all that bad as the new pistons will mean a more 'complete' re-build. The next step will be to get the block machined, heads skimmed and valve guides done. Then we get to the choice of cam ![]() |

Pressure testing has confirmed it's a sound motor.
Shopping list: Re-bore Re face the block New pistons & rings Valve guides Skim heads - to match the refaced block, not for any desire to up the CR Need to choose a cam next - my initial thoughts are to go for a real steel Hurricane. Improved low end torque and it's going in a carb'ed engine. 90 V8 CSW - 1988 |

New pistons landing shortly - it's been a while and the rest has been done.
Let's hope the next update is a bit quicker....... ![]() |

It's a std 3.9 9.35 block which has been re-bored, decked, the heads have been skimmed as well. That alone will up the CR a bit further. It's staying on carbs and I'd like to keep the drivability of the V8 so not too peaky.
Question: What Cam? Is the Real Steel Hurricane any good or should I be looking at a Kent H180? 90 V8 CSW - 1988 |

Well, all the bits have been collected from the machine shop.
Now need to source the cam, water pump, assembly lube, gaskets etc to put it all back together in time for an event on 20 August. ![]() Click image to enlarge 90 V8 CSW - 1988 |

I think you're doing a great job Ranger, sussing everything out before you actually do something,....takes a bit of patience, but ensures the end result is what you want.
I saw on one of your earlier posts that you wanted to keep the exterior of the engine looking stock, I was just wondering whether you would consider a set of pipes, even a larger 2" single exhaust with a decent "sports" or similar "straight through" muffler would enable that V8 to work a bit better & give you that lovely V8 rumble. It's something that's always been on the wish list - the first step would be a sports system instead of the TD5 one that's on it.
However, at the moment with the larger twin port manifolds it's actually doing OK and together with the needle change has really given the old bus more character and drivability. I'm going to wait until the engine swap is finished and see how it performs, then once all the bills are paid I can look at further upgrades ![]() |
