If you back in to something and break a light you can change the lens-wife did it. She backed into a pole and I changed the lens. If I'd had lamp guards fitted when the vehicle hit the pole the lens would have survived but the body work would have been forced inwards by the pole. Cheaper to carry a spare lens (or two) than repair the bodywork.
Having said that for anyone with front or rear light lenses fitted if you buy some rubber tap washers from a hardware shop they are very good for inserting between the guard and the bodywork.
