Had a problem like that it turned out to be a cable rubbing on the lifting eye on the back of the engine, rubbed through the casing and was shorting out on the engine. Repaired the cable and fitted sleeving to protect the cables in that area.

Blimey, Tony - I've been dicking around for ages and you've only gone and solved it in a second! Thank you so much. There was indeed a worn cable that had rubbed on the lifting eye and was through to the copper. Would explain why the problem was intermittent.
Thank you! |

Wasn't that a service action to get the eye removed?

Would any of you happen to have a picture of the offending cable? I seem to have the same problem but can’t even locate my lifting eye

Ah that’ll be why I can’t find it, it’s not there anymore. Everything looks okay round there. Seems to be blowing the 60a glow plug fuse on startup. Anyone got any other ideas?

It is well worth periodically checking the full length of the engine harness for chafing on a regular basis since Landrover unfortunately seemed to forget 50 years of acquired wisdom in securing cables when the built the TDCi Defender. I haven't yet met a vehicle which hasn't suffered some degree of wiring damage, though mostly it is minor and has no effect.
Not long after I bought mine the turbo packed up, and when I started investigating I found that the actuator went straight to the "no boost" extreme on ignition on and stayed there. This in turn led to the discovery that one of the sensor wires from the actuator to the ECM has worn through, but more significantly all the turbo actuator wires were damage as well as the main feed from the alternator to the battery, which is an un-fused permanently-live wire. It was possible to see bare copper on this when the harness was manipulated, and I reckon that I was days, possibly hours, away from a catastrophic underbonnet fire when I found the damage. I freed off the entire harness from its securing points, and at every single one the harness was damaged to some extent. Needless to say I repaired it, reinforced it, and secured it thoroughly with ample anti-chafe protection (using split heater hose as an outer protection), but I still check it regularly. |
