Ambient Lighting Function Question
Hi folks,

I just watched a Youtube vid that showed some of the interior lights in the Defender - it was one of powerfulUKs videos. He mentioned that his Defender did not have the ambient lighting option, so I couldn’t see it in action, but I’m wondering if anyone has a new Defender with this feature and could give me some clarity on it.

For those wondering, this option appears to make your Defender’s interior lighting work similar to the Phillips Hue LED lights that are gaining popularity as “Smart home” devices — the ones that allow you to change colours and brightness levels from an app (in the Defender’s case, the control is in the PIVI system). My main question is which lights are effected by the ambient light option. I see the Defender has a front seat dome light, side lights over the rear seats, cargo area lights (one on each side), footwell lights, door handle lights, and finally lights under the doors that illuminate the ground. I think the interior dome lights are these “smart lights”, but I’m not sure about the ones on the underside of the door that shine on the ground when the door is open.

This might seem like a bit of a frill on an adventure vehicle — and it is, but it’s a nice frill that is actually potentially incredibly practical. The ability to make those lights shine red in colour would be fantastic. Red light doesn’t attract nearly as many bugs, and it preserves night vision — so when I go grab a cold beer out of my fridge in the dark, I’m not wondering what direction my chair is in after being blinded by a white dome light! (This becomes more and more important as more beers are consumed Razz)

Right now we just override the lights entirely (which can also be done on the Defender by pressing and holding the dome light in the front passenger area, from what this video showed), and we can always use that system again in our new Rig, but ambient lighting may be well worth a checkbox on the order form if it does what I hope.

Thanks everyone!

do you mean this, i believe the premium lighting has to be ordered as part of one of the packs,
possibly comfort and convenience ..

That must be it, thanks Zilch. And with that comes my answer. I really want the jump seat but they are saying it’s not available with that, so that’s that.

And I can buy a lot of red LEDs on EBay to retrofit for $3k! PowerfulUK was offering brighter LEDs that are plug and play - They are blue, but I’m sure red ones can be sourced.

I’m still curious if anyone has this feature fitted, and if it works as I’ve described (being able to make all the lights red) because it really is a nice design touch for a touring vehicle if it can be done. Just because I’m out due to my desire for the jump seat (I have a very young kid — I can’t even describe how excited I am to go touring with him chilling between my wife and I in that jump seat, seeing the whole world along with us) others may not want it in their touring rig, and the disco light option could be an asset for the reasons I described in my first post.

Thanks for that info Zilch!

The premium cabin lighting comes with the comfort and convenience package I believe. I have it and I just figured it out. Pretty cool. You can change between multiple color options. It doesn't offer the whole spectrum like some smart lighting would. Looks really cool though especially shining down on the dash. Some interior lights such as floorboard stays white regardless. 2020 Defender S, P300 in Fuji White w/black ext. pack. Ebony leather heated front/rear seats. Comfort & conv. pack. Towing pack. Cold climate pack. Panoramic roof & expedition roof rack. Classic mud flaps. Fog lights. 19 inch 6 spoke w/off road tires. Clear sight rear view mirror. Sirius XM. Delivery 9/4/20

I remember this was debated for ages over on the RRSport forum and the general conclusion in the end was it wasn’t worth paying the extra to have it, some versions came with it as standard equipment, but after a couple of plays with it most folks set it to one colour and never touched it again! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

I agree. More of a novelty. What I wanted out of that pack was the Meridian sound system and the center refrigerated console. That thing gets pretty cold. Better than I expected. Holds about four bottled waters or cans etc. 2020 Defender S, P300 in Fuji White w/black ext. pack. Ebony leather heated front/rear seats. Comfort & conv. pack. Towing pack. Cold climate pack. I have the fridge in the centre cubby and Meridian system, but it not the Surround Sound system just the “standard” Meridan. I’ve had the 820w Meridan system in 3 previous Range Rovers and it is excellent but I had a loan car with the full on 1700w Surround System with 23 speakers and it was fantastic but not sure I would have paid the £4000 extra that was asked for it in the U.K., I suspect the upgrade for Defender is to the 820w not the 1700w system, but I might be wrong. Over the years LR has reduced the standard Meridian from 825w down to 180w and the 825w has become an extra cost upgrade as well at the 1700w system upgrade. I rarely listen to music in the car but on the few occasions in the Defender when I have I haven’t been disappointed with the sound quality from the 400w 10 speaker system. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

I have the 825w surround sound system in my Velar, it’s good but I couldn’t really complain about the standard LR system. At least for 21MY the 400w meridian system can be ordered separate so there’s no need to take all the useless stuff with it.

Thanks everyone, that confirms it for me -- it won't be added as a spec'd option when (if) I order. The main advantage is with the door lights and those seem to be an easy swap.

Thanks for the feedback!

Cheers

I just took delivery of my Tasman Blue P300 S. It wasn't a custom order, so had a few options I might not have picked myself, including the Comfort & Convenience pack ($900). The stereo upgrade is well worth it. Sounds as good as the $3,200 B&W upgrade I had in my Volvo XC90 I just traded in against the Defender. I don't care much about the cool drink box (I store too much general crap in it to use it that way), but I do have to say the ambient lighting is quite cool. I really like it - it's less subtle than what was in my volvo, and does call out things like the 'Defender' logo on the magnesium crossbeam, etc. And the kids think the ground light with the cute defender logo is the coolest thing ever.

Like I said, I don't think I would have ordered it if going full custom, but am liking it now that I have it, and the $500 upcharge over the Meridian sound system isn't a huge cost overall.
