If it were me I would bleed the system just to be sure first, then....
Have you checked what the temp actuually is? Does it get hotter more quickly than you would expect? Get one of those IR thermometers of ebay/amazon (~£8 ) if you haven't got one already. Check what temp the core plugs etc are actually at. If it is not actually getting up to temp, it is the sender or the guage. I had a bad earth on the temp gauge which made it look as though it were overheating. Engine wasn't even warm. 1988 110 200TDi Hard Top Last edited by c18rch on 28th Nov 2018 1:48pm. Make sure it really is over heating, it's a Tdi engine in a pre-Tdi vehicle so it could be that the sender and gauge are incompatible. I had the same problem and ended up putting an aftermarket gauge/ sender in, problem solved.

Is it a Disco engine?
If so it might want the sender swapping to PRC6663 which fits the 200 Tdi Disco engine but is the correct type for a Defender gauge (it's the 2.5TD/NA/etc sensor). 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Hi Martin, yes it is a Disco 200, you are correct, it has only just done this, usually drives with the indicator slightly under halfway, even in the hot summer.
I changed the thermostat (not ad chance to test the old one). Took it for a run, it is now staying just above the halway, so seems a little hotter than before. I did notice the old Thermostat had an 82c opening where the new one is 88c, so I guess tis will make it run slightly warmer. I ave one of the IR temp sensor things. The thermostat housing is about 60c on the outside, the block is running anywhere from 60-70c depending on where the temp is read. The rad is reading 51c where water enters and 30-45 where it leaves the rad at the bottom. This fluctuation I guess is due to the thermostat opening or closing? |

It might be worth checking the sender unit, had a similar problem but it was created by someone fitting the wrong sender in the past. Gave all the indications of overheating but it wasn’t, your engine temperatures are similar to my 300 tdi.

Check the rad is not furred up....
Had a 200tdi some years ago and fitted many thermostats to alleviate the sudden overheating. Also changed water.pump! Turned out to be furred up rad inside. Used correct coolant but still did this. There's a volume that it should hold, I suggest testing how much it currently holds and compare. |

The ir temps seem ok to me and thermostats, rad seem to be fine.

Good point James, suppose its a process of elimination until the faults found, if the stats been dropped to an 82 in the past it may be a historical problem

Thanks everyone for the great input.
The rad was replaced within the last 3 years so I would hope it isn't furred up (yeah, I know it could be) The thermostat was changed also about 3 years ago, I'm guessing it was the only one the guy had available at the time, rather than an 82c being used for a specific reason. The bottom of the rad goes from warm/hot to virtually cold at intervals, so I'm assuming this is the thermostat opening/closing and making the temp difference. I think the next plan is to drive it, carry spare water with me, check levels often, if the gauge starts to go up, use the IR meter to see where any hot spots are. |

Is the viscous fan still in place and working, if so how far away from the radiator is it, if the disco engine has been fitted further back the fan may not be doing anything useful, its fairly common to remove the viscous fan and fit an electric one closer to the radiator thats more efficient. I have a disco 200 in a defender with viscous fitted, shortened blades, although long way back from cowling with rad in std place works fine on cooling front. Cheers
