James, welcome to the forum. The Apple Car Play/double DIN is a popular modification. I have no personal experience as I prefer to stay “old school” and original. However, in the menu bar near top of the screen you will see a search facility. If you give that a try you’ll find lots of helpful information for your project

Here is my upgrade. Cannot remember the supplier of the double din Facia. Bought it from a UK supplier. Player is a Pioneer no apple car play. Also got a JBL under seat Subwoofer. Have upgraded the speakers from stock to Clarion (not the best). If you search in the forum there are few detailed threads on the subject.

If you can’t be bothered with all the faff of fitting a double DIN conversion, there are some decent units about - not sure about car play though.
I have this JVC which can also accommodate a reversing camera. Click image to enlarge You’ll probably want to upgrade the speakers too. Have a look at Mud UK, their kit is ideal for the defender newbie (me a year ago), you can get the same stuff elsewhere a bit cheaper, but the service from Mud is second to none and they’re always about to give you some advice. Good luck |

You guys look like you have much younger vehicles than mine.
Mines a very basic 2000 With a single din. Does anyone know if this converts to a different shape and size console? |

dseven313's Defender is from before the facelift that gave the TD5 the larger centre console, so a double din conversion is a non-starter without a lot of extra work. Darren

Now I remember I bought the Facia from mudstuff. Highly recommended. There are more expensive ones from twisted that includes the clock as well.

It didn't make it into his post but this is what the OP's dashboard looks like and why the usual routes to a double din are more difficult:

Mud do an upgrade for that dash too which will fit a double din if wanted.

Have a look at the Pioneer AVH - Z7200 DAB Single Din.
I have just fitted this to my vehicle, it has Apple car play, I don’t have any pics as the vehicle is somewhere else at the moment but a quick google will bring it up. I like it as it is simple to use and didn’t require modification of the dash, although I appreciate My dash is a little different to yours. |

Hi, welcome to the forum.
I have a 2003 defender 90 and in February fitted the Mud 2 din plastic surround - it's well made but expensive for what it is - however it does fit perfectly. It took a couple hours to fit - just because i always check, check and double check. Mud also offer a JVC double din multimedia system - but i found it for approx £50 cheaper elsewhere. I have been using it for 6 months now and am very happy with it. I also fitted the USB charger that Mud offer onto the new plastic surround (replacing the cigarette lighter). I haven't upgraded the speakers or done anything clever as i have quite a bit to do before i get around to the speakers. I can hear my music driving along with the windows down - it all functions well. Have also installed several RAM components to hold phone and satnav stuff - but that's another story! good luck and let us know how you get on! Neil |

Hi Neil, Thats great thanks for the reply and info - would you mind sending any photos of what yours ended up looking like - and is it a simple 1 man install? Any special tools required? James |
