Factory microphone for hands free wanted
Hi everyone. I’ve just got a lovely set of speakers through the forum so thought I’d try the next step.

I’m looking for a factory microphone for hands free calling. It is Land Rover part number LR040865, not especially expensive new (£50-ish) but may as well check to see if anyone has one spare before ordering.

It is the one that would have come with vehicles fitted with the Alpine Bluetooth head unit and is attached with a few clips and a surface mount on the steering cowl.

Thank you.

United Kingdom 1989 Defender 90 V8 Petrol ST Alpine White
One of The best mods I did on my Puma was to move it to the headliner above the door,
I found if the steering wheel wasn’t dead ahead no one could hear me!
From memory it was just a standard mic with a very long cable & a 3mm jack plug on the end
Probably available on Amazon or the like for peanuts

Can't help on supply but be careful with the microphones and fitting an aftermarket headunit. It sounds like you're aspiring to fit all the OEM parts anyway so not an issue, but in general you need to fit the microphone that goes with the headunit you are fitting (the one that comes with it) due to them changing the polarity in the terminals in the plug.

For instance.... my OEM microphone that went with the Alpine headunit, didn't work with the Sony headunit I replaced it with, and needed me to change to the Sony microphone.

Ah... thank you for the tip: good point.

The stereos I’m looking at do come with microphones so may be better sticking with them and just attaching them with OEM parts.

I’ll pop this thread on hold until I’ve got the head unit in my hands.

I’m an idiot. From the blurry images I’d seen of the factory microphone it opposes like a complex assembly in comparison with a basic Alpine microphone.

Then I got a higher res image:

It’s just the standard alpine 3m long wire that’s been tripled over and wrapped with 19mm Tesa black cloth loom tape (£3). On the end there is a circular plug-and stud that fits to the steering column and clicks into the mike - the part is £3 from Land Rover.

Finally there’s 3 plastic swivel clips securing it behind the dash that could be replaced with cable ties. Thanks to Paul on the forum these clips have been Identified and they only come in bulk.

£6 and my new Alpine microphone looks like the factory one! And is being installed in the same place.

If anyone wants to see how it’s installed I’ve just asked about routing and clipping in this thread:
