Might want to check the dates on those unusual tyres, sounds like they don't get turned over very often?
They might have subbed it out to this lady: |

Clearly some licencing authorities in the country are not fit for purpose - out local authority is pretty hot so I suppose it depends on where you are in the country. |

He’s got a nifty Air powered jack in his van, looks a bit heath robinson but it certainly works well.
There is a problem though - the wheel/tyre combo is too big to fit his balancing machine in the van so I get a credit for that and a free appointment at my local branch to get them balanced tomorrow or Friday. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

Tim, do you not think if you had booked your vehicle in for a visit at 8.30am, Kwik Fit could have got the tyres sent over for this appointment or at least book a time when they were comfortable they would have arrived. They also must know the limitations of their mobile fitting van i.e. Tyre sizes and their tyre balancer? I'm sure the fitters are great guys, but you asked for an opinion on Kwik Fit mobile tyre fitting and if this was an advert for them, it looks a bit un-organised from where I sit??
My wife had her tyres checked and a slow puncture investigated by Bush Tyres (it's who her company uses). Guy turned up on time, with a tyre of the right make and size in case it required replacement (which it did) and was all finished and gone in no time. I have never used Bush (I think they are mainly a Cambridgeshire / Lincolnshire outfit?) but I was quietly impressed by their service. |

Probably wouldn’t have offered me an appointment today, online I had today or tomorrow Morning after buying on Monday.
Tomorrow I cannot do as I have a video conference in the morning Now here’s a question - nothing to do with KwikFit - why would JLR set the MINIMUM recommended pressure for the spare at 50psi, I nearly burned out my little plug in compressor to clear the “low tyre pressure” TPMS warning on that tyre, the fitter left it at a, to me, perfectly reasonable 40 when the other tyres are 33.5 at the front and 36.3 at the rear? All the others were less than 1Lb out. Despite not being able to use his balancing machine on my drive, I’ve just been for a blast onto the motorway and a run to the next junction at 70 and could feel any wheel wobble on the fronts, but as I have a free balancing I’ve been told to go in tomorrow once my meeting is finished and they’ll put them on the machine at the depot. When he arrived the fitter did say that he occassionally couldn’t get bigger than 20’s onto his in van balancer and mine was so tight on the spindle he could even rotate it by hand. You would think with so many cars running > 20” wheel/tyre combos that the person who designed the workshop in the van might have considered that big wheels are so common now. If it is a typo then it’s been added to the driver info display for the dash board display of TPMS..... Keep an eye on them at all times when you take it in. Years ago I was away near Oxford caravanning and had two offside tyre on my RR classic puncture on some barbered wire, the only place I could find open to replace the tyre was Kwikfit, I had the vehicle recovered to the depot, I sat having a free coffee while they did the work, the girl on the reception called me over to tell me they had the balancing to do and it would be finished. I looked through the window behind her and to my horror saw that this you kid was about to wind up the on vehicle balancing machine, I raced out of the reception screaming for someone to stop him, He turned round and came over saying its okay sir we know what we are doing while the manager and other fitters tried to stop me from getting to the vehicle. I had to point out that it was a four by four an automatic box. They could not comprehend what damage they could cause. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

It is hard to conceive of any reason why the spare should be a higher pressure than the highest tyres of the four on the road. On my Defender I keep the spare thus, so it is ready to use on either axle, if it goes on the front I'd let some air out. JLR certainly does some mysterious things nowadays! |

A number of years ago I got a puncture in the 200 tdi on 7.50 tubed tyres. Changed the wheel and called in to a tyre franchise place as I was travelling on holiday. I duly handed over the punctured tyre/wheel combination to a member of staff. A while later another older member of staff came back with the wheel. The tube had been split while trying to remove it. He said they had none in stock and there was no charge for the work done!
As I was travelling on holiday I had to go searching for a tube then find someone competent to fit it. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Those air jacks are quite commonly used for jacking up lorries and moving static caravans around.
My one experience of using KwikFit for balancing went like this. After an hour extra wait (for no apparent reason) manager comes in and says they won't be able to balance the tyres because they're so aggressive (BFG KM2s). I replied saying - so you're saying that a 70 year old chap in a garage in a field in Wales with a bubble gauge can balance them perfectly but a nationwide chain with the latest equipment (poster just behind him stating that) can't? After walking out muttering something I then witness the technicians proceed to jack up the rear axle and go to undo wheel nuts with a breaker bar - proceed scratching heads as the wheel starts turning around. Eventually after some faffing they chock the wheel and manage to get the wheel off. Manager comes in: Manager: "Just thought I'd let you know your handbrake is not working" Me: "Funny, you MOTd it two days ago and it was absolutely fine, by the way it's working perfectly - you do realise it's a prop brake" Manager: "Eh? What's one of those?" Me: "Well it brakes the on the propshaft hence why the wheels turned when you jacked up both wheels." Manager: "I don't understand" Me: "Permanent 4WD, ergo three differentials, ergo you jack up an axle and the opposite wheel will spin" Manager: "Ah, that's a weird design" Me: "Same design since 1948" Half hour later technician comes and the whole conversation goes around again. I had a School friend who had the misfortune to work for a 'Kwik Fit' style tyre company.
They paid him rubbish. He went to quit. They gave him the Managers job at another branch. They shifted him round branches. He drove miles to get to work. The only way he could get enough money to live on was to hood wink nice little old ladies, gullable old blokes and mother's with a child seat in with cock and bull stories about dangerous suspension, 'badly warn' brake pads, changing tyres, that had miles of mileage still left on them. In fact, if he could sell anything, this was his bread and butter. He hated it, got disillusioned and left. I have another friend (yes two ) who is elderly and drives about 6 miles to the nearest supermarket and back every week in his car. I'm not lying, he has tyres changed annually by a national tyre company because he trusts what they say. If he does 3000mile a year, that would be an over exaggeration. I cant get him to see. He took one of his cars in for their brake specialist to do his thing. Brakes never worked correctly after they messed with it and he had to take his motor to a proper garage who asked who had been messing with his brakes before they got hold of it? I think you will find that most of the big tyre companies have some allegiance or are completely owned by a tyre manufacturer so depending on which company you go to will depend on which tyres they will push you into having as there is more profit in them. If you see an advert offering buy three tyres get one free at any of these places, walk away. There is no such thing as a free tyre. You are paying over the top for the other three. Try running a lease vehicle and getting your tyres sorted by these people (as I did for over twenty years). Surprisingly you never ever get any of these faults or problems found by their expert fitters because the leasing companies will not stand for it. |
