sorry not aware of the specific differences of Disco to Defender but in general terms surely its simply a 'replacement' for a poorly engine and as such is NOT a modification......
if the current owner was not aware how would a new owner be?? |

I thought so but the insurers didn't seem to agree.
I believe the difference is in the gearbox and slight changes to the engine itself? |

I thought the only difference was in the position of the turbo. I suspect that the question is too difficult for the tiny brains of the insurance robots, and since they haven't a clue about the difference they take the easy option.

That's my concern, clearly the difference is minor and makes no difference, but in the eyes of the insurers a different engine is a different engine!
I just wouldn't want to end up in a situation where a claim was invalid. |

Why tell them?

Because if it was discovered, and they took issue with it, I assume it would be a problem?

Generally I would agree with you and say declare mods, however arguably this isn't a mod since a 200Tdi has been replaced with a 200Tdi, no performance increase, no structural mods, no increase in insured risk.
It is also likely (I think) that the Disco engine ancillaries would have been swapped with the outgoing Defender engine (because this is the easiest way to fit it) in which case the result is exactly the same as fitting a Defender engine. I would be inclined to say "it has had a replacement engine of the same type as the original" or similar if pushed. |

i have replaced several engines with a disco 200tdi into a defender. each time i have writted to DVLA with the relevant source of engine etc so they can update the v5, then had it MOT'd.
then sent a letter with a copy of the new v5, new MOT to insurance company saying its had a replacement engine fitted engine number...... as shown on v5, so not original engine. points out its same capacity and called same thing. its never made any difference to my insurance. That sounds very promising, thank you.
So if you were switching insurer for whatever reason, what would you tell them about the engine? |

no offence but your over thinking this...........as above its simply a replacement engine for a failed unit and not any kind of upgrade
tell them its had a replacement engine, simples |

It’s been replaced with the same engine other than a few ancillaries in different positions. It’s still a 2.5tdi, if it were myself I wouldn’t worry about it. |

I have never bothered telling insurance of engine changes/ replacements. Technically it is an upgrade as Disco 200tdi is more powerful than a defender one
