Been looking at a really nice TD5 110, it's done 140,000 miles though but with a full and comprehensive service history. Runs very sweet but are the engines good for this sort of mileage and more? Seller reckons his independant (James French) say the TD5 is good for 250k before major work needed.
Thoughts?? Andy |

It is a decent price, just want to be sure I can add another 30-40k on the clock and still be able to re-sell. Andy

I'm not buying from JF, the seller bought from them and has had it serviced and maintained there for the last 3 years. Andy

My Td5 has 140thou miles.
I have had a remap on it for a while, but recently got it re done by Gary at Alive, about three weeks ago and he found my engine to be good. From what I have read the bottom end of the engine is very very good, and the weaker link is the cylinder head, which is an easy job and about one thousand pounds. I have no problem if mine goes after this amount of miles. Mine goes very very well, returns 28-30mpg, sounds good, and is cheap and easy to maintain. I have only ever needed mine to be plugged in to diagnostics twice in it's life and that was for the remaps. You don't say what year manufacture it is, and I would advise you to check the ecu plug for oil, and if you buy, change the injector loom, (I do every two years). Then go to Alive tuning I think you can't go wrong with a Td5, it will hold it's value due to being the last all Land Rover Defender. Even more the case if they continue to put smaller engines in, or stop manufacture completely. Go get it Andy |

I know a guy that tows boats hard for a living and does 90,000 miles per year. He chopped in his last TD5 as it's warranty ran out after 3 years. He had done 250,000 in it and it was still going strong

Bit late to be much use, but my TD5 Disco2 now has just over 200K miles under its belt and the engine is running better than ever; it's now just about run in.
TD5s in particular don't like NOT being used. You are much better off with a high mileage one that has been looked after and used sympathetically than a low mileage one. |

My wifes' TD5 DII is just coming up to 137k miles and it pulls like a train. It was tweaked by Gary from TD5 Alive (as was) about three years/50k miles ago and apart from a warped exhaust manifold last year it's been very reliable.
For years I was wary of TD5's because of all of the added electronic complexity over the previous 300tdi, but I think time has proven them to be excellent engines with lots of tuning potential.
